2008 La Tech. Coming off bowl year, looking for a good start off to new season. Instead, giant kick in the balls.

but I have to go with LSU 2009.

To be that close and come up short on three plays, it was a real kick in the nuts.

I know we weren't expected to win the game, but to lose it the way we did really stung.

One is the popular choice. Maine.

The 2nd one is the Katrina ravaged Tulane "Thanks for the check" game.

In fact, as I walked into the stadium that night I had this thought in the back of my head that Maine would probably win this game and even if they didn't it we would win by some ******** score of like 10-7. So perhaps I dealt with it so much better because I was, in part, prepared for it.

HOWEVER...

2008. I'm in NYC for the weekend, having a kick *** time. Football season is upon us. We trek halfway across midtown Manhattan to get to the local SEC bar. Drinks are flowing, food is on the way, running into a lot of old Bulldog friends, we are coming off a bowl season with wins over Ole Miss and Bama. We are sharing the bar with a large group of Bama fans, but they aren't saying much. In short, life is great. And then Louisiana Tech took the field. No need to rehash how that game turned out.

From that point forward, I have refused to get excited about MSU football. Dan has be close to breaking my vow but I'm holding strong until they convince me otherwise.

I agree. That LA Tech loss set the tone for the whole season and totally took away any excitement for the next 4 months. I already knew we sucked before we lost to Maine so that did not get to me quite as bad.

If we come out and lose to Memphis this year then mark that one down as the worst ever.

LA Tech

We had gone 'bowling' the year before and I thought we would again that year, but then we were blindsided....

but, I remember the loss to South Carolina in 2000 when Kendall Roberson(I think?)got turned around in the endzone on the late TD pass - that cut me, and ithurt. I honestly didn't think we would lose a game that year.

So you got to the bar, had 2 or 3 drinks and then MSU vs. La Tech game started. So if I remember correctly, you probably got to the bar the same time the MSU footballteam was landing Ruston. That still pisses me off. The lackadaisical and nonchalant attitude of the Croom era at it's finest.

I refused to goto Ruston, LA because we should win easy and if we didn't I would feel as you all do as it being one of the games I was the most pissed about.
But I did goto 3-2....and I seriously don't think I've ever been so Ill, couldn't think straight mad as I was that night after that game.

South Carolina 2001. The halftime show was emotionally draining because of the 9/11 memorial. The stadium was so flat during the 2nd half, South Carolina came back and won.

In my opinion it was the beginning of the end for Jackie. I personally blame Osama Bin Laden for our demise.

....since I actually broke a cowbell after that game, but La. Tech gets honorable mention. It's rare that you get to watch nine months of hope, expectation, and goodwill completely evaporate in the space of three hours.

It's Maine, easily. I lost all hope in Croom after that. Never regained any of it, even after the Liberty Bowl. that's what i don't get about LaTech. I don't see how anyone could be hopeful after 2007, even with a craptacular Liberty Bowl Victory. Do some of you only look at the record at the end of the season? Even with 7 wins, 2007 was dismal. granted not as dismal as his previous seasons. But I didn't go into 2008 with any confidence that Croom was finally on the right track. i was so pissed after Ruston, but I can't say that I was surprised by that loss at all.

ETA- dismal is harsh to describe 2007. It wasn't dismal. But I didn't see any of our wins that year as signs that we were improving under Croom.

He did this to seasons and players. We all remember the infamous "secret weapon WR" he took off redshirt status with 4 games left in a train-wreck of a season, just so he could call a crxxm/mccrxxmvy-style running sweep for 3 yds.

Its safe to say Arceto Clark had his redshirt year of "hope, expectations and goodwill completely evaporate in the space of three hours" too.

So glad that train-wreck is not the head of our FB program and Mullen is, thank you Byrne!

The 2 or 3 years Jackie had us 1 win from going to Atlanta with 2 weeks to go in the season (besides the time we actually went to Atlanta), then we allow an underdog Arkansas team beat us.

Ihate to make excuses for Maine, but it really was a fluke we lost. I think we fumbled 4 times in the red zone and once into the endzone (or something like that). Tulane however was no fluke loss. They came in and savagely beat our ***. If I remember correctly we were losing 31-7? in the 3rd quarter. I almost renounced the Bulldogs that day.I am glad those days are over.

Larry Weems, Meridian High football coach and assistant on the Ole Miss team that year, told me State should've beaten them by 5 touchdowns. State was bowl bound, while the Rebs were going nowhere fast. Emory Bellard lost his nerve and called timeout with 30 seconds left in the game to kick a FG. Then, the Rebs march downfield only to get intercepted in the endzone....wait a minute.

Referee Dick Pace, in a move rivaling the officials in the 1972 Olympic basketball finals, called Pass Interference on a play where both players were going for the ball and the State defender had position. The next play, John Fourcade (making the only clutch play of his career, High school, College, or Pro) runs into the end zone and points the football at the State student section.
