I always thought kevin fant had the tools to be good. That offensive line got him absolutely murdered

Todd Jordan. Had a cannon for an arm and leg, would have like to have seen what he could have done with good coaching.

If Don Smith were playing today he would be a high first round pick.

Easy...Omar Conner.

(Wins & Stats)

Croom coast offense wasted his athleticism and ability to throw outside of the pocket. I would have loved to see him play a couple seasons under Mullen.

Obviously Fant and Conner. Taite was also a victim of talent drop-offs on the OL, as was Madkin and Jordan. Lack of program building (more specifically, the lines) has doomed MSU all the way back to the beginning. John Bond could probably fall into this category as well. History repeats itself unless something is done to change it. All these guys started out on teams that offered stellar lines and good protection, then it all broke down as they got older. Or either just had a dipshit as a coach, in Conner's case. What a waste. How many of these guys looked like stars as freshmen and then were damn near booed on Senior Day? It's truly unbelievable. Fant and Conner were both All-State players.....they didn't just forget how to play once they got to Starkville. Just terrible situations for both of them. Now, I don't necessarily think they were NFL guys, but much better than their performances indicated.

I'm hoping Russell breaks the trend. He was brought along correctly, and wasn't pressed into service before he was ready. Plus, he has a veteran OL to block for him. Honestly I see him having another record breaking year and possibly getting drafted.

Fant, without a doubt...

He was just the result of a great QB talent stuck behind a rag tag offensive line, and a team in complete disarray.

Even in that horrid 2001 season, he did outperform Eli in the Egg Bowl, after Madkin went down the week before. He had the tools, but just didn't have anything around him to allow him to display those tools.

This made me think about one of the best WR's we've had but wasted. Tony Burks comes to mind. He was one of the best JUCO players in nation and was buried under the Croom avalanche. If he'd have been in our current offense, he would probably be tops in most WR categories, and most likely still playing on Sundays.

Fant definitely had some ability but we can't absolve him completely and place all of the blame on the OL. He had Rob Johnson syndrome where he held the ball too long and took unnecessary sacks, he chucked the ball blindly down field two or three times a game, and his protection of the ball in his hands was horrid. I'll never forget him running around with the ball in one hand waving it around like lineman bait.

If he'd had a better OL and set of receivers, he'd have been a lot better, but he was still going to have turnover problems.
