36 years ago I was a freshman at Berea College, working at Boone Tavern. Turned over a tray of forks on the dining room floor. Roaches looked like a jail house break across the floor. I need to get back there sometime. Spoon bread is to die for.

Now you can have a beer with that spoon bread.
I miss Papa Leno's and Fast Eddie's Deli.

What exactly are you people expecting when you eat at McDonalds/white castle/etc? It's unhealthy fast food that should be eaten in moderation. If you expect anything else you're an idiot and if it upsets your tummy then you're just a *****.

Also, what kind of goofball goes to a chain like Applebee's or o Charley's and orders a steak? Shew wee people.

Same goofball friend I have that orders pasta at Montgomery Inn instead of ribs.

I have a friend that was a waiter at Johnny Carinos. He said that he served maybe one steak a week there. When people complained that it wasn't cooked right he would just say "you just ordered at steak at Johnny Carinos..."

Any buffet restaurant
Culver's
Bradford BBQ in zandale - wish it was better, as the people were as friendly as could be. But, it was made in a crockpot (you could just tell it wasn't smoked...no smoke ring/bark/etc). A couple other options in town that are much better.

What horrible evil happened to you at Culver's to never make you go back?

I don't eat fast food, except for chick fil a once a quarter or so. So, can't dis Culver's on the food side, as I've never had it.

My feelings center completely on the inferiority of their "concrete mixer" to the blizzard. There's simply no comparison, and if I'm going to spend a carb backload on a frozen treat, it won't be at Culver's.

I had a T Bone at a local joint in San Diego one time that a pride of lions couldn't have scratched. I think it was a piece of kevlar jacket.

You folks need to give that new line of hamburgers at Applebees a shot, though. Good stuff and other than that I hate that place.

Any hipster overrated fern bar type restaurant. Give me a chain any day of the week. If those independent restaurants were any good they would be a chain.

Our posters never disappoint, I ask this because, I've been to many a place that the food, service, and prices blow. Granted I've always left a tip. Two places come to mind for me.

1. Waffle House- the thought of that place makes me sick for its a constant reminder of the drunken stupors I experiended in there. Give me White Castle all day long.

2. The Olive Garden. I like there food but then they committ the ultimate sin of taking away the pizza which was the whole reason I went there.

It's your turn, what stories do you have about places you eat at where the food sucked, or you got up and left because it was that bad?

Cheddar's aka Crapplebee's

If it's a chain, I probably won't touch it. The people that care about the company and product are so far removed from the equation that it just isn't worth it. Poor service, bad food. Haven't been to McDonald's in 4-5 years, Olive Garden in like 20 years.

Except Taco Bell, always game for a #6 and Baja Blast. I'm not happy when I do it, but it is what it is.

If you live in any decent sized town or city why not eat the local fare? It's substantially better for not much more money.
This. In N Out burger is the only chain I eat at. LEK will be here shortly to tell me how big of a pretentious hipster douche I am.

Assuming youre not being sarcastic, this is a terrible take.

In and Out. Shake Shack. Del Taco are all organic, cheap, and delicious. I understand shake shack's business model is opposed to quick expansion. But if these chains can offer cheap, delicious, organic food their regions - why cant the rest of the country?

If Im on the road, Ill eat chick fila. And If Im in a very rural area, Ill eat Wendys or Arbys, which sucks too. The rest are just terrible.

I'm all for bad food. The worse the better. But Cici's crosses the line into self-mutilation. They should strap you to the chairs and bullwhip you while making you scream "MOMMY MAY I HAVE ANOTHER SLICE" whilst nodding approvingly at your freshly reddened arse.

Well, of course, but they'd have to charge a lot more for that erotic pizza experience. Just not a market for that in this economy.

Arbys - I had a friend who's wife was a big shot in the fast food industry. He told me that Arby's "roast beef" is actually made by pulverizing the scraps on the slaughter house flour, then mixing it up with a past like product to give it consistency and then rolling it up into loafs that appear to look like roast beef. It's actually one grade above dog food (seriously).

Ryans - use to be a steak house. Several years ago they had a great deal on lunch buffet, they served steaks to order and had a great vegetable table and solid bar. Then the discontinued the steaks but did offer hamburgers and pork steaks. Then they did away with the pork stakes. The last time I was there about 3 years ago they didn't even have hamburgers. in fact they didn't have a piece of meat in the whole damn place and it suppose to be a steakhouse. The vegetables were tasteless, the bread stale, and for all the world the place just reminded me of a soup kitchen. That was the end of me and Ryans.

Also forgot to mention Chuck E. Cheese. Anyone who has kids knows that hell will be spending an eternity in a crowded Chuck E. Cheese and having to eat their paper mache covered in red, flavorless paste; which they call pizza.

I still take my kid there from time to time, but only to play the games.

Ryans's has definitely gone down hill. I use to hit up their breakfast quite often for omelettes but haven't in several years.

Have you read dog food ingredients lately? Wholesome af. It's crazy. I don't know if they're lying, or using the spoiled parts of these ingredients, but dogs eat good.

What I'm trying to say is Arby's is delicious.

Right on. And a few others nailed it. These newer chains are doing it much differently than the Burger Kings and McDonalds. You're getting quality food, that's also made right there, and fast. You didn't see this 10 years ago.

Living in the NE, I've only heard of Del Taco, SS, I&O, etc.. But when you look at 5 Guys and Chipotle (two chains that are killing it in the NE), they offer simple menus but they make their items to perfection. They don't have 100 offerings which has always caused trouble for many restaurants. Simple menus where every one knows how to make the items, and make them well.

You also have old chains with an identity crisis. 5 Guys is by no means a healthy option, but they don't try to be. They don't throw in healthy options with their regular greasy burgers, doubling their ingredients needs. They offer Burgers, Hotdogs, Fries, and Shakes. That's it. They aren't fuddling with 3 new chicken sandwiches every season and salad options.

My uncle owned a Hot dog/Ice Cream stand. It was perfect. We made everything extremely well. But as the years went on he added Soups, Pizza, More fried items, even fish. And the product took a hit because of it. If you're a fast food chain, local stand, or food truck.. you need to keep it simple. Have your awesome namesake item, and a few others. Make it to perfection. And that's it.

Uncle Charlies?

Love the M&P Burger/Dog/Ice Cream stands they have up here, although not a huge fan of Jumpin' Jacks. The one we go to most often is off Vischer-Ferry, Country Drive-In. But you're right, they do tend to have a little too much on their menu. Got their fried chicken once and it tasted more like fish since they serve fried fish as well and probably use the same grease/deep fryer.

And FU to anyone hating on Arby's, food of the Gods, if you ask me.

Shake Shack is about as overrated as Chick-Fil-A.

tell ya one place I'll NEVER **NOT** eat at ever again... 5 Guys.

If that place was a woman I'd divorce my wife and bend it over a grease fryer.

Kinda wanna get a 5 Guys burger, swing by Arby's to grab a roast beef sammy, hit up CiCi's for 2 slices of paper pizza, and then drive to Ryan's and eat it there.
Gotta finish up at White Castle with a Crave Case dessert. Then that my friend would be a great culinary day.

You're sort of close. Funny enough it was right near the Vischer-Ferry exit on the Northway. But hasn't been opened for quite some time.

Yeah JJ is very overrated, only grimey Schenectady folk love that place. That said, Mike's Hotdogs in Schenectady gives Gus' a run for their money. And again, they make like 7 things. Small ingredient list.

Chili's/ChiChi's - both equally terrible
Applebee's - **** American food that is outclassed by every restaurant comparable to it, **** for everything but Ricky Bobby references
Subway - Penn Station exists
Jimmy John's - cold cuts are for morons
