COLUMBUS, Miss. (WTVA) -- The city of Columbus will hold a gun buy-back program next week at four locations across the city.
Columbus police are partnering with community and faith-based organizations to have people voluntarily surrender their weapons without any questions being asked.
Beginning Monday, February 25, people can bring their weapons to Sims Scott Park, Townsend Community Center, East Columbus Gym, or the parking lot of Walmart.

The program will offer $20 for b-b guns and air pistols, $100 for handguns, $200 for rifles and shotguns, and $300 for assault weapons.

Authorities say there is no limit to the amount of handguns someone may turn in, but they do reserve the right to limit the number of gift cards or cash an individual can receive.

The locations will remain open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day through Wednesday, February 27.

Columbus city leaders say once a gun is traded in, it is the property of the police department.

They will check the weapons to see if they are lost or stolen, and will work to return them to the rightful owners.

Chief Selvain McQueen says the program is open to people who live outside the city.

What is it? Its a GREAT chance to go buy an AR for $400 in the parking lot of

buy-back locations. Think I may try to pick up a couple.

Park about a half a block up from the "Buy Back" and put a big sign out that says

125$ for Handguns, 225$'s for Rifles, 325$ for Assault Weapons Sell them here no questions asked. (of course don't buy the junk)

Then turn around and sell them to a dealer/John Birch'er. Easy money.

They had something like this in one of the North Western states recently, like maybe Oregon. Afterwards it was referred to as the nations biggest outdoor gun show. Buyers were walking the line picking out the good stuff and offering slightly higher prices than were the cops.

It's a way for the local mayor to allow all the guys who have committed a crime to sell back their guns and be scott free from any crime associated with the gun. The mayor's police chief only presented one case to the sitting grand jury this time. Yes, one case. I guess he and his mayor have had this up their sleeves for a while and all those awaiting an appearance before the grand jury can now get rid of the evidence. Shame is all those awaiting grand jury in drug cases are the street guys for the mayors drug cartel. The sheriff broke away from the interlocal drug task force because the snitch the city put on the task force was taking care of the mayor's boys. Columbus is starting to suck big time as far as crime goes. All the veteran police officers are moving on to better jobs just to get away from this mayor and his chief. Now, got that out of my system but I have two friends who know what is going on in this county and it's now going to get interesting since the mayor's boy isn't in the meetings.

What is it? It's a beautiful way to blow you folks' tax money that live there

Remember this when they claim that they are short on funds for infrastructure fixes.

I wish upon wish I could make it down. I'd beat their prices for sure on the good stuff and I have 2 junk BB guns that I would hand over in a heartbeat for 20 bucks a piece. I get nothing for throwing them away.

I have a piece of **** 22 rifle that doesn't work. I could sell it to the cops for $200 and use the money to get a new one that works. This makes perfect sense. One more gun out there on the streets with funds provided by the tax payer and the cops.

$300 for assault weapons? I've got a claw hammer (can be used to assault/kill)

Wonder if I can get $300 for it? Or a rock (David killed Goliath with one). I hate the word assault weapon. If I'm using an AR-15 for self-defense, then it is a defense weapon.

More shootings and people have been shot/killed in these area probably than any other area of Lowndes County. A friend of mine got shot in the *** playing hoops one day...back in the day.

So with them saying that if any of the guns turned in are stolen they will return them to the owners is a bunch of junk....seems like a set up to me. Maybe the mayor and his family members will turn in all of their guns....biggest thugs in the whole city.

Nothing says well "well thought out plan" like disarming the law abiding private citizens of a town. Look for their home invasion rate to sky rocket if this is successful. All the thugs and gang bangers will be laughing their asses off at citizens stupid enough to fall for this

Well the normal gun owning population will not be turning in any of their guns. This is more directed at the minorities...since its minorities that are leading the charge and setting up turn in points in the hood areas.

FYI, Colt AR 15's, (very few available), were selling for $2500-2800 at the Jackson gun show in January. Used DPMS were going for $1500-$1800. The only assault weapons they are getting for $300.00 will be junk.

True story. I was shooting targets with my pellet rifle when I was 10-11 years old and had a pellet ricochet back and hit me on the fingernail of my trigger finger. And yes. It hurts like hell.

If anyone in the area is interested...

I have some essentially worthless handguns I would be willing to part with $60 apiece. PM me if you're interested.

I arrived at 1:00 PM to sell my piece of crap 22 rifle to the City for $200. The program had already run out of money. $10,000 gone in less than 4 hours. The program was supposed to hand out cash on Mon. Tues. and Wed. from 9-3. No new less crappy sub $200 22 rifle for me on the gov't cheese.

Saw the news story on WCBI interviewing people selling their guns. Most where white males over the age of 45 selling crap guns. One guy interviewed said he is going to use the money to buy some new guns. One guy had 6 junk guns in a shopping cart to sell $1200. Didn't see any criminal/gangster looking people selling guns.

AR stands for Armalite Rifle, as it was originally designed by ArmaLite company. Other shotguns and pistols are available with AR prefix models.
