Yesterday was the first time that we consistently came out in spread sets and then had short passes that forced a defense to cover the entire field. Instead of running four verticals, we would have a slant with an out cutting underneath it for an easy 5-7 yard pickup. We would have a 10-15 yard in with a drag coming underneath it for the easy pickup. Things like that were seemingly 35-40% of the offense yesterday.
Now you may say, "Well why is that frustrating? Isn't that a good thing?" Yes, it honestly was a good thing yesterday when we did it and it will continue to be a good thing going forward. My problem is that for the last three years when we've had the best passing quarterback our program has had in at least 15 years we refused to operate that way. Instead, it was like our coaches decided since we had a quarterback with a big arm all they wanted to do was throw it deep.
Our coaching staff needs to actually start living by what Dan Mullen said at his introductory press conference: that we'll mold our schemes to fit our players. Instead, we ignore our players' strengths and operate based on the whims of the playcaller. Yesterday proved that to me once and for all. THAT is the most frustrating thing about yesterday's game.
