I did golf course maintenance and loved it. Being out there at 4:30ish in the morning, no one on the course, picking the range, placing the pins, raking traps. It was a blast. We were done by around 1-2pm everyday and we got free golf.

I think that has to be my favorite high school gig, I had a few others that might come close.

Never had time I went from running C.C in the fall to playing on the basketball team in the winter and back running the mile and 2 mile in Track in the spring.

I got to know a lot of police officers and judges when I was a minor...One particular judge who took a liking to me sentenced me to a diversion program where I could work off one of my fauxpa's... Chose a golf course, Tara Hills. First day/morning, there I was mowing the 3rd hole green, no idea how it happened, but I ran over the sprinkler head and we had a geyser shooting 20' ?? into the air and flooded that hole. Grounds foreman said "give me your card", signed it for 20hrs completed and sent me home. So that was pretty sweet.

Walking beans was a good job. Up early and walking fields of soybeans to remove weeds with a garden hoe (prior to Roundup Ready beans). Got to do it with a group of friends and could work and chat all day. Pay was not bad for a first job, and I felt like I was making serious cash. The worst job had to be detasseling corn seed production fields.

Both were hot and dirty. Great jobs for a peri-pubescent boy. I never had a “favorite” job as a high schooler. I figured out pretty quickly that I needed to go to college. Ironically I do a lot of the stuff now at my farm that I didn’t care for as a kid. We just never had those damned cedar trees back in the day. They’re taking over the world and destroy pastures.

Movie theater for three years, great job, walked around the mall where it was at, talking to the girls who worked in different stores or food places. Going to Taco Bell with the gang after the last movie got out, you could crush your gut it was so cheap back then and FRESH made. Life was good!
Oh man, a mall movie theater! That is where the action was at back in the day!

mid 2000's. I was a lifeguard, I was a pool manager, and I did some roofing.

easiest was pool manager

best. maybe roofing. hard work. especially when you are a 2 man crew. I was the sole laborer about half the time. other half there was another. was kinda cool though, you would start work between 5 and 6 and be done before noon. made good money for honest work.

let me tell you. carrying a whole roof's worth of new shingles up a ladder by yourself is tough work.

I did sports all 3 seasons and wrestled year round, so I only lifeguarded during the summers at the country club. Very easy job. Got to competitively swim to stay in shape, work on my “tan” that has contributed to numerous skin cancer spots, check out hot chicks whose daddy has money and hot milfs whose zaddy has money, check out some whales and grenades to appreciate the hot chicks and milfs.

High school lifeguarding set the stage for college work. My teammates and I would lifeguard in the fall and spring indoor and then we’d go do lifeguarding somewhere “fun”. Rent a house at the lake or the beach for the summer, guard by day, party by night. Some of my favorite memories with those friends. And now we hardly ever speak or see each other. Such is life.

I was the night shift "manager" at a Sbarro in a shopping mall through high school.

"Managers" realistically just made the pizzas and did the books at night. No one ever actually ate at Sbarro, so it was mostly flirting with cute girls at the mall, and then helping ourselves to free food (Once something had been on the line for 2 hours it had to come off and be "thrown out" and this happened a lot because again...no one really ate at Sbarro).

I dont think I had to bring beer to a single party my senior year of high school. Id just show up with several massive boxes of pizza every time and drinks were shared en masse at that point.

What a time...

SOFT.

Did all that plus worked at the Seed store, fed the cattle daily, broke ice in troughs, calved, walked bean fields, adjusted ground irrigation, and played every sport.

Worked at an appliance store, along with another hs student. Two kids and a pickup truck delivering new appliances or picking up those that needed repairs. We traveled a wide range from York. We had a blast. Also learned how to repair washers and dryers, which led to another college era job.

First day? My son works in golf course maintenance and they don't let any kids mow greens until they've been there a couple summers.

Really depends where you are at...the nicer the course the less chance you are mowing greens.

It kind of goes like this

1. Range picker
2. Pin Placer/Garbage
3. Rough Mower
4. Fairway Mower
5. Greens Mower

I will say to Sbarros credit (this was decades ago so I dont know if its true anymore) we made everything from scratch in the back. Well not everything. The sauce came in jars and obviously we weren't curing our own pepperoni.

But we fresh made the dough daily. We prepared the pastas and potatoes, salads etc all daily. Compared to a lot of pizza places that just get everything shipped in preprepared. They at least did that right...

I loved the slices!

But it always seemed like the food court was more of just a gathering place and less of an eating place.

When I was like 13ish there was a small video store by my house. This was right before Blockbuster started and got huge.

My dream was to work at that video store...the Mom/Pop that owned it were only there some of the time and then they had a few workers. One of the workers was like 19-20 years old and looking back on it now, a total loser but at the time, it seemed like he had the coolest job in the world.

It was a small store...he just hung out behind the counter...I think you could still smoke in there at that time. He would watch movies and just shoot the ****.

100%. My son started at 15 and loves it, he's going to school for course management and I guess that's his plan. I think he'd tell you to add in weed whacking somewhere at the bottom of that list!

Oh yeah, once the morning routine is done the "real" work starts. Raking traps, whacking weeds, pulling branches. All that stuff.

It is a great HS gig. I loved it. I wish I would have taken even more advantage of the free golf.

I didn't have a favorite HS job, they all sucked. I grew up in rural NE and was not a fan of all the ag work. Got to do most of it, castrating bulls was right up there for fun. Had some laughs riding the hay rack, but it still sucked. My first "real" job (ie not for family) was working for a company burying fiberoptic phone lines. I remember being told, "if you even nick the insulation the whole line has to be replaced and it's your ***." And I also remember wrapping several nicks in electrical tape and shoveling dirt over it as fast as possible. There's probably still someone in Snyder, Nebraska that wonders why their phone has so much static!

Delivered newspapers.

Then I removed old railroad lines (abandoned spurs). Never been in better shape than digging out and moving 5,000 railroad ties.
