What will you do if the flag changes?

I will:
  • Put up a big flag at my desk at work to show everyone how much I love Mississippi. Granted, my close coworkers already know and think it's obnoxious, but I want the whole building to know.
  • Put a sticker on my car so that whenever I drive around, whether its in state or out, everyone knows what pride I have in my state.
  • Get a lapel pin to wear on out-of-state business trips. I am often the first lifelong Mississippian people have ever talked to, and with that in mind I feel pressure to make the best possible impression on them. Wearing a little flag can show them that I love my state in a way that's not just awkwardly telling them.

I've always been jealous of people from Texas, Tennessee, etc., who have iconic state flags they can use any time they want to show pride in their state. You know, Texas is right down there at the bottom with us on every socioeconomic and health ranking of states, but most people don't have the same associations for Texas and Mississippi because Texans are so outwardly proud of their state. We need a symbol to show our pride too, and a new flag will finally give us that opportunity.

It doesn't have to be the Stennis flag, but it's simple and distinctive enough to get the job done. The detractors say that changing the flag won't end racism, and while that's true (and no one ever claimed it would), it will at least give us a symbol to show the other 49 that we love our state too.

I hope that our legislators think about things like that - it's a wonderful rebranding opportunity for the state.

I have the maroon Mississippi sticker from Maroon & Co on my car. If the flag wasn't what it is currently, I'd probably have that on there.

I get what you are saying, but Texas is not anywhere close to MS in those categories. They are the 23rd wealthiest state and 34th healthiest state according to quick Google check. MS is 49th / 50th, as you would expect.

Same thing I do now. I have one small one in a rec room where I have flags from a bunch of places I've been over the years. I'll get the new one to replace the old one. I have been thinking about caning it anyway. The only other state flag I have is Alaska. Most of them are national flags from Europe.

What will I do? Watch the division in our state rise to levels I've never witnessed. And as that is happening, wait for the NEXT thing to be used to create even more deviceveness.

Go about my day like any other. I’m totally for changing the flag but a state flag is just not that big a deal
to me.

None of the above. But my wife and I have been flying the Stennis flag for over a year now. We would most likely switch if MS adopts a different new flag.

You think removing will create more divisiveness than already exists?

It won't move the needle either way I don't think. I hope we get it changed if for no other reason that it's a flag and if more than 25% of the state is bothered by it, that means it's the wrong flag.

But most of the people being vocal about it aren't being vocal about it because they are personally hurt by the flag. Certainly there are some of those people, but I think most of the people personally hurt by it are quietly plugging along with their life because they have bigger fish to fry.

Most of the people agitating over it will fall into two camps, with one camp just moving on to the next thing to agitate about and one camp actually being surprised that changing the flag didn't satisfy anyone.

Again, I want to change the flag and wish we had done it a long time ago. But it's not going to change anything, even more so now that whenever it gets changed it will look like it was changed under duress rather than changed because a majority of the citizens started to care that it feels like a poke in the eye to a good number of Mississippians.

The Honorable Senator John C Stennis was a long-time segregationist. Any flag or aircraft carrier named after him honors a racist**

The same thing I do with the one we have now. Basically ignore it. Afterall, I'm told by those that defend desecrating and burning the flag of the United States of America that its only a piece of cloth.

1) exhale a sigh of relief
2) have a fleeting moment of pride for my home state
3) think to myself, “what took so damn long?”
4) go about my day

Which is why its being renamed the Hospitality Flag and Lauren Stennis is distancing herself from it to give it a chance to be adopted. She understands the negativity associated with her grandfather.

The only stickers and flags I own(other than the American flag) are MSU flags. No changes going forward for me.

I live in a neighboring state now - have never (and would have never) flown a MS flag prior (though I like flying a lot of different ones next to my US one), but already ordered a Stennis one a week ago in hopes that I would be able to at some point. I've seen a lot of variants of it at teepublic also - a lot of people have been creating and buying them.

Same for me. I don’t let trivial things affect me. Or I try not to.

Life is way to short for such things.

Representing the Tennessee flag is a fairly new thing, maybe the last 10 years or so. But it has really caught on and people love to show pride in their state. Mississippi has so much to be proud of but there is nothing for everyone to rally around. People that haven’t lived in Mississippi don’t know Mississippi

I shall raise a toast to the new flag and say " 'bout cottin pickin time!", then I shall properly furl the old flag and put it away.

As Robert E. Lee said after signing the instruments of surrender, "Time to furl the flag boys."

Why does anyone think the Stennis Flag would be any better?

Just go look at the Wiki page for John C Stennis.

Stennis was a zealous supporter of racial segregation. He signed the Southern Manifesto, which called for Massive Resistance to the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. He also voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Civil Rights Act of 1968. He supported the extension of the Voting Rights Act in 1982 but voted against the establishment of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a national holiday.

You better get his name off of any proposed flag.

It's named after his non-segregationist granddaughter and she has taken her name off of it just in case. It's not an issue at all.

And was renamed this week to the Hospitality Flag because Lauren Stennis wants to distance HER name from it.
