What would it take to keep a great coach at MSU?

All the big programs in Football had a big name coach in thier past that made them a big time program. Bryant, Spurrier, Neyland, Switzer, Royal, Bowden, etc. Before that, you gotta figure they were just average teams. What did those teams do to keep them around and change the program? Different times now, but what would we do?

Not saying Mullen is or isn't that guy, but if he were to win the SEC a few times in the next 5 or 6 years, and maybe a NC, how could we get him to stay and build the program? Obviously we couldn't keep up with the big boys money wise,...maybe control, perks, free Barnhills buffets? What would keep him here for the duration?

...if we ever get to a situation where other schools come calling for our coach, that will be a good situation to be in. That shouldn't even be on our radar right now.

Some of you act like State is Southern Alabama Techinical School for the Deaf or something. We're a major SEC school with the money and resources to keep a coach happy.

Look at Florida State for an example. Bowden was ready to go to Bama, but they insisted on an interview process. He was offended, pulled his name out and stayed at FSU. 3 years later when they came crawling back offering him the job straight up, he wasn't interested any more because in the mean time he had taken FSU to anothe level.
I would think that we would want a similar process to take place for us. To become a great program, you need a coach to be there for at least a decade who can build tradition and continuity.

I think the only way he leaves is for a top-15 program job. And the problem there, is those jobs are hard for coaches to get that are winning 6-8 games a season. And thats where we should be with Mullen with the occasional 10 win season for the next few years.

Unless Mullen pulls some back-to-back 9-10 wins seasons in the near future, I think he stays 5-7 years. And if he wins 9-10 games and leaves, it will be much easier to find a replacement.

So everybody needs to quit worrying about losing successful coaches. Let them have the success first and then we will deal with it

If he leaves State it will be for the last job he takes, assuming we keep giving him the support he got this year, both from fans and the school.</p>

we may keep him awhile. If we could keep him for at least another four to six years, he would probably have the program in good enough shape that we could find an adequate replacement, maybe someone already on the staff who will have studied under him. I don't want to get too carried away, but Mullen appears to "have it", whatever it is.

Spike Dykes really got that program to be a consistent winnner much like Jackie did here. I know Leach was looking at other jobs a couple of year but everything was settled and he seems happy to be there now. I think theres several factors that come into play with having a coach a long time. Him liking the town, Athletic Director, getting the pay they think they deserve, having a good fan base, and etc. It has been done before. Look at Kansas State that program was nothing before Bill Synder and Manhattan is much like Starkville.

His wife must be happy in Starkville...$ alone, must not be the only thing in his life (how much do you really have to have?)
$2,000,000 vs $4,000,000 you can make it on either.

He must be content with what we have to offer.
