Whatever happened to the Freshmen team?

Did the NCAA shut that down or did the other 6 teams just do away with it because of cost?

Seems like with all the $$ out there now it's a great way to get players & assistant coaches (& GA's) some experience game time experience.

I remember as a kid going and watch Neb play Air Force.

Way back in the day, at the end of their season the Freshman team would play the Scout team in an epic contest they called the Toilet Bowl. You could get in for free.

Became pretty silly when Turner Gill and Irving Fryar played freshman ball. What a waste.

I have no idea if this is related but I would guess that when freshmen became eligible to play, this helped lead to the end of the freshman team. If I remember right, Nebraska's freshman team was usually undefeated.

NCAA shut it down after the 1983-84 season.

Nebraska had a JV team, often made up of just freshmen. They played until then end of the 90 season (and technically one game in 93 as a favor).
