Obviously there are not enough ships for the in state OL-DL! In the past many would still walk on. What do you think our chances are to get them to walk on this year???????

we'll always get a player or two per year from the walk-on program (janovich) but they're right -- college has become too expensive -- even in-state -- to walk-on in most cases if you've got p5 alternatives. why would you walk-on to nebraska if you've got a commitable offer to... minnesota or iowa as an example.

you wouldn't. and we've had players start at those teams from in-state and nobody in their right mind blames them. you've also got ndsu and wyoming who have jumped on nebraska kids with full rides.

given youtube, the ability to market yourself etc., times have just changed. the only way i could see someone in-state walking on with p5 offers on the table is if they've got academic scholarships to pay their way.

I can't imagine most of these legit guys walk on. Kittrell has a ship to Minnesota. Arnold and others, I'm not familiar with their offers, but it would seem that most of them won't pay $50k for the chance to play the lottery on playing time.

we were #1 in the nation in walkons on the 2 deep depth chart last year (see right hand chart)

despite Iowa having a good year last year not sure we want to be leading the nation in this categry

"The times...they are a changin"

That's why recruiting at the highest levels requires soooo much more focus.

Got a spare $100,000? That's a rough estimate of costs for 5 years at UN-L. I won't have a son good enough to consider walking on at UN'L, but if I did and a Dakota school, or Ohio etc came along and offered him a free ride, that's tough to pass up.

If they are worthy of a scholarship...OFFER THEM! If not...DONT !

Its that simple to me . If a kid is worthy of an offer if he was from any other of the 50 states then he should be worthy of one if he is from Nebraska...jmo. Otherwise I'd handle business the same way. I'd watch kid his senior year and see how he develops.

It's great if the kids will do it. But a lot of these guys who are good enough to walk on for NU have offers from lower-tier schools or from FCS schools. Lots of those guys ending up in the Dakotas. I can't blame them for taking a full ride someplace.

[QUOTE="kakdawg, post: 2540595, member: 4976"]If they are worthy of a scholarship...OFFER THEM! If not...DONT !

Now that is profound. No variables here - "if a kid is worthy" and comparison of the talent from the other 50 states shouldn't be much of a task.

There was a time when they courted kids to walk on who had good GPA's and ACT test scores. They could justify giving them "academic" scholarships that helped keep the costs down. I knew a kid from Kansas who played for the Huskers and the cost to attend was about the same or less than in-state plus he got to play for Nebraska. Whether that still happens or not I am not sure. My guess is there are some steeper regs now than there formally were.

There are several factors you have mentioned including the ridiculous cost of higher education. The other is there was an era when you knew without doubt you were going to be developed by the best and given every opportunity to play along with scholarship players. I think that option is still there but I am not certain if it as prevalent as it once was.

If you are a lower income family with several kids and a good student you can probably make things work. It is the average kids that get caught in the cost factors.
