What's going on with our baseball team?

I never played the game, but my son was a player on one of the top 6-A teams in AL several years ago in HS.

Defense should be a gimmie in baseball. What we do.
See the ball, catch the ball, throw the ball (accurately).
Sheesh.

I hope I'm not wrong on that... But I can't say I've ever seen a team struggle as consistently as this with errors. So, I think we'll come around.

You start with a group of above-average-to-very-good hitters, and teach them how to play decent defense. Like you said, that part isn't (or shouldn't be) as difficult. Even the worst defensive teams out there make 90% of the plays. You put an offensive-minded lineup out there with a good pitching staff and you can win a lot of games.

It's much harder to go the other way in a short amount of time -- to take a bunch of undersized, sure-fielding, second basemen-type guys and teach them to score a lot of runs.

My son was one of those, a second-baseman type who wound upplaying center field.
A short guy who wasn't a power hitter but had a .430 because he was veryfast andcould turn a dink into a base hit.
He was a reliable left-handed batter, and was usually in the leadoff slot.

His speed and quickness also made up for his lack of size in the outfield.
OK for HS, even Alabama 6-A,but doesn't translate into being an SECplayer, so I understand what you are saying.

I just hope our MSU team is developing and maturing during this pre-SEC season.

However, we are 4-0. I have seen seasons where we would be 2-2 or 1-3. I'm just saying that this team should get better as the season goes on. They seem to have an attitude that they just won't lose or give up. I think it's going to be a fun year.

I will say this, reading the quote "Our whole dugout feels that when Ben Bracewell and Devin Jones goes out on the mound that it's over," Cohen said. "We feel like we have an unbelievable chance to win the game and that's when it becomes fun to be in the dugout when you have those types of people around." from several articles makes me feel very wooly about our closers. I didn't realize that Ben Bracewell was supposed to be so good. After watching him on M2M last night, he had some sick stuff. He and Jones are going to be very good for us this year.

Dude looked terrible in the field in the first few innings, but hits a game-tying bomb in the ninth. I'd say he made up for it.

Especially when there are obvious areas for improvement. The blueprint for Omaha certainly doesn't include 3 errors per game. Still, the bottom line is 4-0. I'll take it.

Defense is something that a baseball player HAS to make himself like. That's the only way to get better at it. A lot of guys want to spend all day in the batting cage working on their swing, and that's not a bad thing at all. But most players can become good defenders, but they have to make themselves work on it.

I know Russ Sneed has made some errors. He also has been out with his hip injury for much of the fall. I think that has really hurt him individually, but nonetheless, he is messing up plays that he should make.

Ryan Collins has been another main culprit. Four errors at this point in the season is ridiculous for any outfielder. I suspect that will change though, because until he proves to me otherwise (and he might), I'll just say he had a bad weekend. I think he's trying too much- for example trying to throw out a runner at first against Rhode Island when all he had to do was simply throw it in to the cut off man.

That said, third base seems to be a real sore spot for us on defense, and if you look at the stats, that position and Ryan Collins are the main two culprits- we have ten errors and at least six are between Russ Sneed and Ryan Collins. So, something we might see is Cody Freeman play third when he is not catching and maybe even give someone like Sam Frost a shot there. The other problem we have is that is the one postion that we have had injury problems- Jarrod Parks should be starting there and he is a pretty good defensive player, and better than what we have now, and now you have Frank Rawdow injured.

I think that Cohen is going to stay with the Sneed/Butler duo for now and see if they can work things out for themselves before he does what I suggested, though.

I don't think we hate winning, I was pumped that we ripped UAB's heart out and that Cohen beat down Polk's team. But we want to KEEP winning. I consider this constructive criticism and even Cohen himself is saying that the defense has to get better.

It's foolish to not address it, because we can't always count on back to back home runs against the other teams closer every night.

and like any other type of player in any sport, they have their weaknesses and strengths. And like in anything else in life, you have to work harder on your weak points than your strengths. Players have to want to work hard on defense, and you can easily tell who does and who doesnt.

We are fortunate in the respect that we have overcome these errors and gone on to win the games. That is tremendous. Had we lost, the mindset of our team would be something like- "we got to tighten up on defense soon or our season will be lost before it gets really started". Players would start pressing and worrying about errors and making mistakes. And that doesnt help anybody.

Instead, since we have won those games, our players are more likely to have the mindset "if we work harder on defense and tighten it up, there is no limit to what we can achieve. We are never out of any game"...and with baseball being such a thinking man's game, that mindset will make you better than you really are every time.
