What's got to happen for us to win @LSU tonight?

I think if we come out with a chip on our shoulder you will be able to tell early on. We can count on LSU shooting it well, so second chance points will be the determining factor in my mind. We have to limit them to one shot, and I'm hoping Rick focused on rebounding and defense the last few days. Will Moultrie be back? I think so, but that doesn't mean we will win. I think this game will tell us a lot about how we're going to finish the year. I haven't completely given up on this team like some have, sometimes the only thing that inspires a talented group of egos is when they lose to someone they shouldn't and get embarassed. Maybe this will be what ignites this team, or maybe I'm just hoping it will.

I would switch off even if it created a mismatch, You still have to get the ball to the mismatch.
See Rivers, Austin, vs Zeller, Tyler

Everyone is scared to leave their guy because they know no one is going to rotate down and take their man. And they are right, because when we do, we get killed. The biggest problem with this is Sidney. He gives up at least eight easy points a game simply by not rotating. He also jump switches when the guy is already guarded.

I'd almost say that we need to just play zone when he's in the game, but when this team plays zone teams just keep getting offensive rebounds until they finally put one in.

That we did a terrible job putting pressure on Georgia's offense. They had easy trips down the floor and we were completely passive. It's one thing to stand in front of someone, but it's a whole different dimension on defense to take away something another team does well. We didn't do that against Auburn, LSU, and Georgia. I don't know if Stans is afraid to give up "secrets" (he's been in the league 14 years)... but damn...you'd think a once top-20 team would know how to take away an aspect of another team's offense they do well. Offensive rebounding comes to mind (effective boxing out of key rebounders... also setting up fast-break opportunities to keep them from crashing the boards so hard).... also cutting into the paint (zone defense maybe?)... and hot 3 point shooting. Those things can be combated with effort and focus on cutting off a part of the offense that makes those shots work and force them to do something else. We didn't do any of that.

ETA: This is exceptionally key after we make buckets... especially in runs. It seems like every time we made buckets in those games, we allowed an immediate answer. You can't put teams away if you can't seize momentum of the game... and you can't take away momentum if you score, then allow an easy answer.

Watch our defense and then watch a good defense. We play defense to hopefully keep the ball outof the hoop. Good defenses are stingy. They wantthe damn ball. They put pressure on you. They attack you before you can attack them. We are very passive and not agressive at all.I will tell you another thing thatgood defenses do. They make you work your *** off to get the ball. When's the last timewe fronted the post? I don'trecall seeing it all year. Then again, you can't do that if you don't have someone to back up up on the help side.

until late in the game of jumping out on the pick n roll at the top of the key. One time in particular I remember him jumping out on the pg and he and Dee had him doubled. Pg thru back to top of key to Sid's man and for some reason, Shaun Smith was flying over trying to intercept the pass from the off wing. Sid's man caught the ball and threw it over to the # 1 freshman all american for a WIDE open 3. If Smith stays home, that was a perfectly run D on the play. Now Sid late was awful and gave up easy uncontested layups or dunks. But it's the entire team on the defensive end. Dee averages over 2 steals a game which is good on paper, but when he gives up layups and open 3's by not getting thru screens, that number is skewed big time! We gotta step up on the defensive end period to get the ship righted.

Good teams force other teams to do things they are not as good at. For instance, if you have a really good point guard who can cut in the lane all day on his left side, but struggles more on his right, wouldn't you want to manipulate yourself in such a way to prevent him from cutting in on you to his left? You give him the weaker, less comfortable option. That's what I mean... Georgia was killing us with spot up 3 point shooting... we allowed them to get hot early on because we left open windows open for them to take confident, comfortable timed jumpshots shots. Simply standing in front of a guy while he shoots over you is not guarding him... you guard him by either taking away a pass, a cut, getting a hand in his face, throwing off his timing of either his shot or pass, SOMETHING to make him just a little more uncomfortable. Harassing him, so to speak. Teams have been doing that to Dee bringing the ball up the floor and it works. Why? It forces us to take 15-20 seconds to set up before we ever start running a play and chances are, we can't get a good look in only 10 or 15 seconds. That's what I meant.

Not to detract from your points, though, because they are valid.

All game long he was aggressive, coming out to the perimeter to challenge shots and cutting off guards coming off screens, something we've never seen him do. He was maybe a little too aggressive, as he could have had more than 12 rebounds if he hadn't been constantly in the air going for blocks (ended up with 3). He had some lapses that cost us down the stretch, but so did almost everyone else, and at least it wasn't for lack of effort. We all know Sidney's given us plenty to complain about in the past two years, but damn, try to put aside your vendetta against him and give credit where credit is due.

We got 17'n out rebounded by uga! 16 were 17'n offensive boards. And sidney gotta an effin 40% of the teams total rebounds....plus he chipped in 10. that's why he was in the game for 35 mins. A 50% 3-pt shooter is what killed us.

I think that was one of, if not Sidney's best defensive game so far. He played through picks, challenged shots, and rebounded well. He still has a tough time boxing anyone out, and that will hurt us tonight, but it's not Sidney's defense alone that is our problem. Our entire team plays very passive defense. We don't look like we're trying to get a stop or shut anyone down. We look like we're hoping a rebound will fall our way so that we can go play offense.

their bed shitting performance on twitter and focus on playing basketball.

Dee really pissed me off after the game with his responses to criticism. He basically said the loss to UGA shouldn't be viewed as a horrible performance and that the team was moving on with or without the fans. He diverted the issue and acted like it didn't matter to him either way that we lost to one of the worst teams in the conference.

If we carry this mentality into tonights game, we willget blown out. I just hope that somebody has stepped up since Saturday's debacle and gotten this group focused on the task at hand. I've been looking forward to tonights game for a while, since I can't get up to Starkville for many, but I'm debating on even driving up there tonight now. With the late tip,and gettingback to New Orleans around midnight, paired with the effort given at home this past Sat, Im strongly considering not going up. Its hard to put forth effort and sacrificetodrive 80 miles, for a late tip,to watch ateam that apparently doesnt put in the effort required or sacrifice to be at their best. I know a couple of State fans that live in BR who were ready for the game, but aren't even going after Saturdays performance.

It's now a matter of getting enough traction to keep from going all the way down. Win the next two and maybe we crawl up to the edge at least.

in the Georgia game. Many times during that game he just let his man get wide open and get free points. Sid killed us the last 10 mins of the game. Moultree killed us the whole 40. Don't know if it wastendinitis or what but he had his worst game in a Bulldog uniform against Georgia. Didn't even look like he was on the court.

there were the three turnovers credited to him plus at least four more he caused. I love the guy as a player and we obviously wouldn't be where we are without him, but I'm not convinced he's ready for the big time because of his Jekyll/Hyde tendency.
