I am not really sure I see anyone's attraction for Elliott as OL coach. Here or elsewhere. His OL here were ok, I guess. Not so good that we should still be talking about it nearly a decade later.

It was the total package. He's a good talent evaluator. He's a d@mn good OL coach. He's a GREAT energy and "gel" guy. He is something you need on any staff, and he's one of the best of "those type" guys. I hope he's OL coach and AHC... OR they bring Shawn Clark (from App State, ousted HC) as OL and keep Elliott as TE/run game coordinator and hopefully AHC.

If he's THAT good, it seems odd we're the only P5 team to have given him a shot at anything.

His head coaching record at Ga State wasn't that great either. At the G5 level you want to see a coach win his conference.

Refresh my memory, just how good we're his OL's here? It seems we have two very different opinions.

Yeah, I'm not anti-Elliott by any means. I just don't think he's necessarily as good as some our fans make him out to be. Yeah, he's super high energy and all that, but I don't know what that counts for. Muschamp was a high energy guy.

We're at a position where we can make a great OC hire and really turn the corner. I seriously doubt Elliott is the best we could do at OC, which some are advocating for. And I don't even know about OL.

That said, there is some merit to building a staff of guys you know are loyal, and I think Elliott would be.

That's the thing. I don't recall them being THAT good. I don't think they were bad, but they don't stand out as a superlative of those teams. Not to me anyway.

How many OL did we send to the NFL from that time?

Its only been one year that they worked together, right? I doubt Loggains got that attached that quickly.

Odd thing to me is that Dowell said he wouldn't have left USC for just any job and that there were only a handful of places he would have considered leaving for.

Maybe it's just me, but I would not put App State in the small handful of destination jobs.

seeing as how one of the reasons he came back was because of the South Carolina system pension, I doubt he would go to a small school to be considered an assistant coach again. He will make more money at South Carolina and I can assure you Saturdays are a lot more exciting.

Why on earth would a coach with local ties to the community, who was the HC at Georgia State while still living in Columbia, who left HC's job to come back home to be a coach on the USC staff now just leave for App State for a G05 coordinator position? That kind of move would make zero sense. The only way he is leaving is if he is told by Shane to leave.

May not be a destination job for a coach but I would love to live in Boone.

The articleninposted earlier made it sound like him leaving was wanted by both parties, and maybe App St was just the landing spot.

Sounds like "classic coach speak", I would not put to much stock in that statement, LOL

In one of his comments, Beamer said "we can do better". That was mixed in with all the sweet talk coach speak, but it seemed pretty blunt.

Could we do better?

I think we could, but part of that is me thinking we could shift philosophies.

We shouldn't need to settle at all though. We're a hot name, with an exciting qb, and we've got money.

Its too late to discuss if Shula is "settling", since it's official now.

Is it official? Well, promoting from within is definitely much easier than hiring proven college OCs outside your program.

Yes, might not have been officially announced but it is officially happening.

Mike Shula has proven himself quite extensively as an OC and a QB coach. On paper he's easily the most "qualified" OC we've ever had besides Steve Spurrier himself.

I don't know about extensively, he was an OC in the NFL a couple of times but ended up an offensive analyst for Buffalo. But, hey, I'm just along for the ride and enjoying this season.

He's spent 11 years as an NFL offensive coordinator, an additional 11 as an NFL quarterback coach (not double counting OC/QB duties), another 10 seasons as an NFL assistant coach for other offensive positions / duties, head coach at Alabama (fired, yes), and played QB at Alabama and in the NFL. May have learned a thing or two from his dad along the way.

I'm just saying, on paper... he's the most qualified offensive coordinator we've ever hired. There's probably not a close second. Again, not counting Spurrier's double duty as HC/OC.

But...did he really want to be here? That seems to be the most important qualification for being a coach at Carolina.
