Back in 1994, I was on a bus in Los Angeles that had a bomb attached to it. It was activated after we hit 50 mph, but would only go off if we dropped under 50. Some crazy son of a ***** got on board the bus and let us know about it and was able to get us all off before we blew up but that was the most scared I have ever been in my life.

about 15 years ago, I was 70 or 71, my garage door got off track. The cable, which is spring loaded, was just stuck on the side of the pulley. I tried to wedge it back into place with a screw driver and it snapped. It wizzed passed my face and caught me on the shoulder barely. I had a cut that didn't require stitches. Afterwards, I googled how to fix it and everything I found showed people literally getting killed by those cables snapping and slicing them to pieces, one even being de-capitated.

Survived bush plane crash in Alaska. 8 in plane 2 died, me, not a scratch. However it was 5 days before being found and during our camp was surrounded by hungry Brown Bears. My friend who could find humor at a hanging said, I’m on a bad luck trip, survived a plane crash, and now it’s become a bear hunt instead of a fishing trip. All true.

Nothing to match some of the stories on here, several close calls in cars like everyone else, but probably the stupidest thing I have done in the last 30 years was go jogging on Parkers Mill Road, inside of MOW near Cardinal Run baseball complex.

I run against traffic, like you are supposed to, but it is a very narrow country road, with almost no shoulder, and in a dip in the road, a pickup truck passed another car going about 60, and I am sure never saw me because I was in front of him down in the dip on the opposite side of the road, and I felt the truck mirror miss my head by less than a foot.

Scared the absolute **** out of me, and I never did that again, got back home and spent the day wondering just what the hell I was thinking. And I was old enough to know better.

My dumbass older brother (may he RIP) was playing around with what he thought was an unloaded pistol. Needless to say, he dropped the pistol and it went off, missing my head by about 3-4 inches.
When my grandparents sold their house they raised my mom, aunt, and uncle in about 15 years ago my grandpa found his old gun leftover from WW2 in his closet. He was looking at it and now the entertainment center in my grandmas bedroom has a bullet hole in it. Luckily no one got hurt.

I've been hospitalized with pancreatitis (which can be fatal) a couple of times and I can recall more than a few instances where I've ran into some severely terrifying weather while driving, but as far as I know, I've never had a truly near-death experience.

Thanks for your service, michaeluk26. :)

My grandmother passed away of pancreatitis. Brutal illness. She became septic when a test was done and a probe clipped an organ

Mine were more of what if and neither resulted in an injury.

1. Went camping at the Gorge about 20-21 y/o. Didn't get there until like 11pm. We hiked up (not down) about 1.5 miles or so. Proceeded to build a camp and get hammered. I woke up in middle of night to take a leak...I woke up the next morning laying in the grass. As I stood up I realized I was about 10 feet from a 75 foot plus drop off.

2. When I was in HS I was on my way to visit grandma in the hospital. If you are familiar with the "cut in the hill" in NKY it is a stretch of what used to be a windy portion of i75 about 5 miles south of the river to Cinci.

Anyhow, they were doing construction the ramp I took to enter the highway had a Stop sign at end of it. So you are stopped waiting for a gap to merge on to highway. Dude rear ends me going about 60mph at end of ramp (he didn't see me stopped he said, lol)...well the impact was so significant it nearly pushed me onto interstate where a semi was blaring by....the sucker missed me by 5 feet or so.

Honestly, that one was scary as hell.

Damn... a lot of talk about pancreatitis. My wife got sick about 8 years ago with bad stomach pains. I was out of town and her mom told me to fly back as something didn't seem normal. She had gone to urgent care and they just said it's likely a bug. We were new to Louisville and she didn't have a doctor yet, but a friend said to call her doc. The new doc said she was too booked up but I begged her to take her. She agreed. Ran an image on her stomach and said everything is messed up... get to the hospital stat.

She had salmonella which got so bad it effed up a bunch of her organs. Gall bladder had to be removed. And the worst part was it caused pancreatitis which would flare up quite a bit for the next two years. Doc said if she went to the hospital any later she'd be septic and in the ICU for months (if not dead). Instead she was in there for ten days. Don't eff around with salmonella.

Earlier this year I was doing an evening jog through Rosslyn in Arlington, VA when I legally crossed the street with a walk signal when a car going what seemed like 120mph came flying through a red light and missed running into me by inches. It was close enough I could feel the suction of the air from the car when it passed by. It was so close that I’m not sure I’m not currently in an alternative reality where I died in the other. This was only a couple days after the Clarke incident.

Not being a smartass here, but how far away would the car have to be from hitting you where this alternative reality wouldn't exist?
I’m not joking when I say I’m not really sure how it didn’t hit me. I am sure my perception of the event is overcome by the anxiety and tenseness of it, but it feels like a miracle that at least some part of my body wasn’t contacted. It left an impact and realization of how quickly things can be taken away.

1. Around 1994-ish, hitting black ice around Evarts, Ky., in the heart of Appalachia, and doing a 360 on a small mountain road, stopping just short of the edge with a long drop to the river below me.

2. Covering Rich Brooks' Monday press conference before the 2006 season opener against Louisville and suffering a heart attack.

This is more of a "this is not happening" mixed with a brush of what I believed to be nearly killed, you tell me.

6 Friends and I went on spring break in 2000 to Daytona. 3 of us were on the football team so we'd dip b sometimes just us. We had copious amounts of pot already but wanted to try Florida bud. We'd succeeded two days in a row by asking black people and I know how bad that sounds. The 3rd night changed everything.

We found a guy but he said he needed a ride. We were naive, sheltered 16 year Olds so we said yes. But as soon as I saw him I got a bad feeling. We did have enough sense to pat him down. The place we take him he comes sprinting out of and we could hear the trailer owner screaming get those crackers outta here.

We took him like 5 more places but the weed he had was all we were focused on until we realized we were taking him on Crack deliveries. During these deliveries he said his name was Montana. But he tried to convince us he was quarterback, point guard, and pitcher for St. Joe's. He was cracked out but setting us up.

The last place we took him to what is now called a trap house. We started realizing something is up as random people came in but never left. They Were plotting on us. Anyways right when we started the car to leave outta intuitions. About 15 of them came out trying to break the windows. Unbeknownst to us Montana had done something to the back door of a jeep Cherokee to where it wouldn't lock. I was sitting in the back beside him. They opened that door and tried to drag me out. As soon as they nearly had me out my buddy took off. I truly believe they would've killed us.

I **** you not not even a mile from there we got pulled over. Literally the first thing he said was "you boys have a drug problem?" I was like how does he know we smoked weed. We told him no and asked why? He said we were on the hottest Crack and Cocain street in America. We convinced him we took a few wrong turns and he let us go. If Montana had still been with us we'd prob still be in prison.

And what are the odds that we run into him the next day at a taco bell? I had a bad temper back then and I walked up to him and shoved him as hard as I could and was going to the ground and pound before I was pulled off. He apologized and said he'd go get us free weed. On his way back he ducked behind weeds cause he saw a cop and the cop saw him. He ran to the beach and 5 minutes later he came sprinting back wearing different clothes he'd stolen on the beach. He runs right through traffic full speed and flips off the multiple cops chasing him. Come to find out this dude already caught one body and conspiracy to commit murder. Which means he prob set up someone else like he tried with us.

Sorry it's this long a post but everything I wrote is 100% what happened. If anyone has similar stories or more nearly killed stories I still wanna see them.

Dude this is insane, and as someone who was willingly put myself in similarly risky situations, it resonates. Hopefully Montana is still off the streets.

Oh they caught him just mere seconds after he flipped them off. There was basically a small task force looking for him on the murder and conspiracy to commit murder. His real name isn't Montana. I'll configure out his real name somehow and get a mugshot. Dude looks like a murderer.

I was in Egypt diving in the Red Sea gulf of Aqaba around sharm el sheik. The boat was filled with drunk Russian snorklers and we were about to do a super technical drift dive. I asked my friend asser jokingly what we would do if the boat didn’t follow us and he said “we ll sleep in that”. “That” was a ww2 era Russian battleship that was crashed and stayed on the reef.

we did the dive, like I said it was highly technical and before we knew it a down current carried us to 150’. We were able to maintain control and man it was one of the most beautiful dives. 3-4km later we surfaced. The only problem…no boat.

Asser who is familiar with the area says let’s get on the reef. The water was waist high. It was me asser and a woman from USAID. In scuba you stay with your buddies. I pleaded with asser “no not the reef” there are scorpionfish, lionfish, fire coral, sharp acropora you name it and the waves were breaking hard on the reef.

well we ended up on the reef. My thoughts were this is how I’m gonna die as the waves pummeled us into the sharp coral ripping our wetsuits apart. Next asser is screaming “we need to get off the reef”. So him and I swam to the edge of the reef to tread water while the girl stood on the reef with her fins in her hand crying. This went on for 90 minutes. I look down and as I was protected by my full 5mm wetsuit that was torn well asser had a shortie on and he was bleeding profusely. I moved far away from him and he says “where are you going?”, I say “do you see those dark shadows man?” He quickly realized they were sharks and man he was bleeding. They were likely oceanic white tips but fortunately they came close but left. Thank god all we gotta do is get to the russian boat and someone will find us. Wrong.

we were in the strait of tiran and even worse we drifted into Saudi water. We were probably a km from the Saudi coast and a zodiac came to our aid. They told us in Arabic to get in but asser said don’t do it. They will take us to Saudi Arabia and put us in the clink. Anyway the zodiac came and asser negotiated to have the zodiac go get our boat to pick us up. It took another hour but the boat finally came.

with 10 ft swells getting on the boat wasn’t easy, asser immediately cussed out the captain in Arabic and then proceeded to his prayer rug. My wife was on the boat and even though I had been gone for 3 hours she thought I was “around” so she wasn’t even looking for me. I have another story but it’s not as good.

Grew up in northeast. Senior year, Friday night, drinking at buddies dad's condo. Get in the car to head out to party, get on I-95. Car in front of us hit the brakes. Buddy swerves left, then right and back to left to avoid. He overcorrected, we hit median/guardrail, hop over it, land on all 4 tires in speed lane of oncoming traffic. Only damage was indentation of guardrail into the driver side doors. Plymouth Horizon with 5 idiots spared.

I was rafting on the New river with my cousins. I was at the front of the raft and we went over a rapid with an almost vertical drop and a deep plunge pool below. The raft flipped and I went straight down. It couldn't have been more that a couple of seconds but once I got sucked under it felt like I wasn't coming back up and then the lifejacket shot me straight to the surface. I guess I wasn't really close to dying but It was the only time I ever experienced that life flashing before me moment.

-spinal meningitis when i was 22 or 23. Week in the hospital and i have no memory of 90% of it. Errbody thought i was gonna die or at best be blind/deaf...im fine.

-Long story short: if you are prescribed an antibiotic for a sinus infection or such FINISH IT...even if you feel better half way through the bottle. At least thats the most likely way i got it.

I haven't done it again either. The outfit we were with had a cooler of beer waiting on us when we got out. That was the best most memorable beer I ever had in my life.

Also was at a whorehouse in Juarez, Mexico with a buddy in 98. Pretty sure I wasn't gonna make it back. Almost as scared as being in the execution position. Scared shitless
A buddy and I had hit the pavions in Izmir turkey. Pavions were night clubs where girls hustled guys for drinks. We had had our share of drinks and were walking back to the bus stop. If we missed the bus, it was several hours to the next bus back to the base. I looked back and see my buddy taking a leak on the window of a car. Some Turkish guy was asleep in his car and he woke up to a stream of urine hitting the window right in front of his face. I could run like a deer and run all day long, so I wasn't to worried, but there must have been thirty mad Turks chasing us. I didn't know what I'd do if they caught my buddy. I got to the bus stop just as the bus was pulling away and got the driver to wait on my buddy. I can still see him at the back of the bus flipping the bird to the crowd behind us as the bus pulled away.

My friend and I was making out with this Mother/Daughter duo. I drew the daughter. Just as I finally got her naked, car headlights went across the bedroom. She jumped up, looked out the window and said Oh, **** Daddys home! I think I was a Sr in High School. I went out the back door and hid under the deck. I could hearing screaming and crying and stuff breaking as I lay there in total darkness afraid to move. I heard the back door open and the guy come under the deck towards me. Once he got close enough I hit him with a board and took off crawling. I made it to the car and took off. My friend was running across the yard toward the car so I slowed down and let him in. He was bloody and beaten. I told him "i told you we shouldn't have come here, that guy beat the hell out of you". He said " He never seen me, I escaped out the back, went to hide under the deck and hit my head on a pipe or something". 5 yrs later I told him it was me that mistakenly hit him in the head thinking he was the dad coming after me.
