Conference play open up last week, and while the top 3 favorites won, it wasn't without some excitement. The big nail biter came in Newland, as Avery, despite throwing 6 interceptions, had heritage on the ropes for 3 and a half quarters until their linemen finally wore down. Polk breezed by Madison, and Mitchell flexed some muscle in Black Mountain over an improved Owen. We all know what is going on this week, but there could be another interesting game also.
Polk (7-0)(1-0) @ Owen (3-3)(0-1)
Polk continued their winning streak, and dominated Madison to remain undefeated on the season. Anchored by a methodical offense, and a punishing defense, the Wolverines keep that "ol pickup" pushing along. Owen, while improved, still has a ways to go, and a victory this week could energize the Warhorses to a strong finish on the season. With an impressive O line, a good QB, and probably the fastest player in conference, Owen has enough pieces to give Polk a run. Their lack of defense, most notably difficulty covering the pass, is the main weakness. Expect Bruce Ollis to have his boys ready, but if Owen is able to break loose for some big yards, this could end up a dandy.

Avery (4-3)(0-1) @ Madison (0-7)(0-1)
Avery had every butt puckered in Burnsville friday night, until midway thru the 4th. The collective sigh from Heritage fans could be heard all the way in Black Mountain. On a serious note, the Vikings proved that they could play defense, and are well on their way to a winning season. Fortunately, they get an easy week against Madison, before they welcome Polk to the high country for Homecoming. I would normally write a little tidbit about Madison, but quite frankly, there's nothing to say.
Avery 42
Madison 6
Mitchell (7-0)(1-0) @ Mountain Heritage (5-1)(1-0)
4 games. 2014 was the last year Mitchell beat Heritage. 2011 was the last year Mitchell snagged one in the Hole. Could this be the year? On paper, the Mountaineers should run wild, but we all know better, and Pisgah seems like it was a decade ago. Heritage has a lack of offense, but the defense is the cream of the crop. Mitchell will have to pull out all the stops to move the ball. And speaking of Mitchell, the Mountaineers have been playing some stellar defense also. Slobberknocker, slugfest, backyard brawl, what ever coinage you want to call the Toe River War, its should be a doozy.
