When did awards show host monologues become roasts?

Have they always been this way?
Admittedly I very rarely watch any kind of award show. Maybe they've always included a roast.

I don't particularly care for that kind of humor, so it stands out to me, but I don't remember having always seen it in those situations.
But then again, I just haven't watched many of those situations.

Maybe because people seem more sensitive and fragile in society generally, it makes the roasts that have always been seem more significant.

When I think about such a host, I picture Billy Crystal interjecting something mundane. Maybe it wasn't supposed to have been mundane.

I haven't watched many awards shows in a long time, but there used to always be some very light roasts sprinkled in. But they also were practically never funny, with a lot of cheesy jokes that got polite laughs. It was basically the same quality of writing as america's funniest videos for those old enough to remember them.

The espy's had probably more roasts than other shows as they started off a lot less seriously with lots of kind of gimmicky, one off awards. I've seen clips from Shane Gillis at the recent ESPYs and based on the clips I've seen, he basically had a full stand up set of roasts in there, and ones much harsher ones than I remember, but he was also funny, which most awards show hosts are not.

Seems like Ricky Gervais really started it at the Golden Globes, which is a totally different vibe since the celebrities are all sitting around tables and drinking. It's kind of expected now at the Golden Globes, which is probably why they picked Nikki Glaser for the most recent one.

For those who didn't see Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes:

The ESPY hosts over the years have routinely roasted athletes. Peyton roasting Kevin Durant was pretty good. Norm Mcdonald was probably my favorite ESPY host but sometimes roasts can go to far (see below)

Gillis was good but he was nervous and his delivery was off. But the content of his stuff was great, it could just have been delivered about 10X better.

I guess the Ricky Gervais performance was the first time I was aware of one being a scathing roast, and then only after the fact, since I wasn't watching it live.

I grew up in the late '70s and the '80s without cable tv and without an ABC station, so we watched whatever was on NBC, CBS or PBS. Those days would have been the last time I'd watched an awards show - the Oscars or whatnot.

I liked it altho I only watched his act afterwards. I dont watch those stupid award shows. Ricky monologue was absolutely awesome. I have an inappropriate sense of humor, especially to people who have a stick up their a$$. I like all that edgie humor twisted jokes and what not.
