I've seen plenty of NFL players come out of MSU. Fred Smoot, Jerious Norwood, David Stewart, Tommy Kelley, Anthony Dixon etc.... But I have yet to see us have an NFL QB and WR. Lance Long doesn't count and I never saw Moulds play. Am I missing someone? These are two pretty damn important positions. Maybe MSU should think about getting TOP LEVEL talent at these two positions one year? How much better would we be with Andrew Luck or Justin Blackmon? Dan Mullen go GET a 17ing NFL QB and WR. You are getting paid $2.6 million dollars.

So does Moulds not count because you did not see him play?

I get your point though. We have turned out plenty of DBs, LBs, offensive linemen, a few running backs, and several tightends but never a QB and rarely a receiver. Of course, the last QB we sent to the NFL did not even play QB once he got there (Don Smith).</p>

Since everyone is using Alabama as an example, I'll continue this trend. Greg McElroy was a pretty good QB. McCarron is a pretty good Quarterback, but certainly not as good as McElroy, I don't think. Either way, he is leading an undefeated team ranked in the top 5 right now. Why? Not because he is "Andrew Luck" or "Tom Brady" good, but because he has a stand-out O-Line who could block a Mack Truck and create gaps that even I could run through. Not only that, he probably has the best Running Back in the SEC in Trent Richardson. When you can effectively run the ball, it opens up the pass game. When you can effectively pass the ball, it opens up the running game.

Now, let's examine us. We have a mediocre, thin Offensive Line with a pretty good running tandem in Ballard and Perkins and a 5 Star QB with some inconsistent wide receivers. What is the difference, you say? Let's start with the O-Line. We have had a hard time run blocking this year, strangling our ability to run the ball. So now, our only option is passing the ball. We have struggled pass blocking, so our quarterback has very little time to throw the ball without scrambling. Couple that with Wide Receivers who struggle to catch passes, and we struggle to pass the ball. Two elements of offense cannot be effectively utilized because we struggle blocking up front. Teams like Alabama and LSU don't have this problem. Neither of those teams have a "first round caliber" quarterback, however, they can effectively move the ball because of a good, deep foundation at O-Line.

So I honestly don't care about getting top talent at the quarterback position without good players to protect him.

and I'm hoping Russell turns into that. You know a guy that can hit a deep pass when a guy is open for a TD like Brandon Heavens was last Saturday. And as far as WR, I did see Moulds play and he was worth the price of admission just to watch him especially in the 94 season but no, we've had no one close to that since. One of the problems is likely that even though Mullen is an offensive guy, our offense is still viewed as a run dominant team. Mullen's spread doesn't throw the ball all over the field like say a Mike Leach version of the spread does. We whiffed on Moncrief, Brassell and Singleton last year but hopefully at least getting Morrow will be a cut above what we've been signing. I believe Morrow is the only 4 star receiver Mullen has signed aside from getting Bumphis his first year.

quick question about this "request" - do you want an NFL QB at State or a great College QB

Just looking at the top 20 QB rating for this year the college schools are:

Cal, Michigan, Ole Miss, Georgia, Purdue, BC, Harvard, Utah, Purdue, Eastern Illinois, Virginia, USC, Vanderbilt, NC State, Va Tech, TCU, Auburn, Syracuse, USC

What you don't see there are Alabama, Florida, LSU, or Texas (4 of the 5 last national champs) and the Auburn (5th school) representative is actually Jason Campbell, not Cam. It can be done without a NFL quarterback

Vince Young, Tim Tebow, Cam Newton... you just proved the opposite of your post. And the reason Texas is struggling this year? 3 QBs. They don't have a really good QB right now. But you're apparently saying Texas, Auburn, and Florida are better now without bigtime QBs than when they had them? Their records show otherwise.

Not in any round. That is sad. Considering there are like what 7 rounds in each draft? Back in the 80's there were sometimes more rounds. I bet 100 other D1 schools have had a QB at least drafted in this time frame. Our man John Bond was the last QB drafted from MSU.

Although we lost Saturday, the way Russell played I think we can possibly see some light at the end of the tunnel. With no help from the O-Line, I think over the next couple years Russell may develop into a great SEC quarterback.

NFL QB's and WR's have no eligibility left. You'll have to settle for a really good HS or Juco prospect.

Now Auburn could probably find a way.

I have never noticed this. Perhaps we should let coach know that he should be going after some Parade All American QB's. This is mind boggling that he has yet to notice his deficiencies.

at sarcasm is also mind boggling. I wonder how many other BCS schools haven't had a QB or WR drafted since 1996? It's a pathetic streak that needs to be ended.
