1977 - coming off a 9-2 year with a returning QB, a bunch of backs including Dennis Johnson, and most of the D. Made it to no. 12 until the collapse. Everybody overlooked losing most of the OL. A bad OL ended up being our downfall.

1981 - coming off Bond's 9-3 year freshman year with almost everybody back. Preseason top 10. But we got fat and lazy. Teams figured out the wingbone. Lost to Missouri, Bama, USM and UM.

1992 - Sherrill's 2nd year. A loaded veteran team. Sleepy went down and that was that.

2000 - Another loaded team but it lacked depth on the DL. That team was the best in the country for 2 weeks. Oh, what could have been... but Westerfield slipped in the ice

2001 - Sherrill brought in Juco's and put their names at the top of the depth chart before they made it to campus. We were done before August.

2011 - Stomping Michigan set us up. We didn't know losing Sherrod would be so big. Relph coming up short at Auburn was big too.

2015?????

okay ...

1977 - coming off a 9-2 year with a returning QB, a bunch of backs including Dennis Johnson, and most of the D. Made it to no. 12 until the collapse. Everybody overlooked losing most of the OL. A bad OL ended up being our downfall.

- In 1977, MSU was in reality, coming off a 0-11 season and were the 'walking dead' much like JWS last couple of years thanks to OM/NCAA.

1981 - coming off Bond's 9-3 year freshman year with almost everybody back. Preseason top 10. But we got fat and lazy. Teams figured out the wingbone. Lost to Missouri, Bama, USM and UM.

- So, where was State ranked entering the 1980 season? Last or next to last, coming off Emory's first year and a 3-8 season. AND nobody would even fathom that State could come close to beating Bama much less end up 9-3. Yes, '81 didn't meet expectations and still stings but we lost to Bama by 3 in Tuscaloosa, to Southern by 1 in Jackson and to OM by 4 in Jackson.

1992 - Sherrill's 2nd year. A loaded veteran team. Sleepy went down and that was that.

- Agree, Sleepy was the 'heart and soul' of that team.

2000 - Another loaded team but it lacked depth on the DL. That team was the best in the country for 2 weeks. Oh, what could have been... but Westerfield slipped in the ice

- The USCe game was a 'back breaker' soon followed by the 7 point loss in Baton Rouge. And, agree we should have beaten both Ark & OM.

2001 - Sherrill brought in Juco's and put their names at the top of the depth chart before they made it to campus. We were done before August.

- The "JWS lost years - '01, '02 & '03" were a direct result of the OM PIs and NCAA.

2011 - Stomping Michigan set us up. We didn't know losing Sherrod would be so big. Relph coming up short at Auburn was big too.

- Agree that the loss at Auburn was tough; even worse was the USCe loss by 2 in Starkville; but I felt a lot better at the end of '11 than I did at the end of '12

Bottom line - Don't see a whole lot of folks having State in the top 20 to start the '14 season; It's the polls at the end of the season that matter the most.

that '77 team was bowl and TV eligible.............

we played UF on TV in fact. We were still coming off a 9-2 season. The forfeits came later.

I posted something like this on genespage back in the summer of '01. I got the secret rebel label shortly thereafter.

Think the '77 team went 5-6 before the forfeits with losses to ... Florida in Jackson, KY, Memphis (shudder), USM in Starkville, Bama and LSU by 3 in BR. And, my point was ... In '77, State was starting to feel the effects of prolonged NCAA 'vestigation that lasted through Tyler's last year in '78 (when we did go 6-5).

Don't think you are a 'secret rebel' but do think you may have the years mixed up

I meant my liist of hyped years............

got me the secret rebel label.

As for 1977, I remember it very well. The 1976 team was on probation. It was one of our best ever but couldn't be on TV or go bowling. Probation was over in '77. Tyler had recruited pretty well in 76, 77 despite the NCAA. In fact, he recruited extremely well considering.

t was our time. We beat Washington in Seattle and then it all came crashing down starting with UF.

As for your assertion that we were feeling the effects of the NCAA in 1977, maybe we didn't have a good class in 75 and that hurt us in 77. Nevertheless, we were supposed to be good in 77. We were touted, we were ranked as high as 12th and then came Terry LeCount.

My bad ... thought you meant that the '77 team ended the season as 'bowl eligible' (winning record) instead of zero NCAA bowl or tv sanctions.

. I got the secret rebel label shortly thereafter.

I know you're going to get a telephone call, you'll be activated by a special code phrase- the opening lines to William Faulkner's Absalom! Absalom! followed by your real given name Fauntleroy Braxton Bragg McGregor. In a trance, you'll start shouting "HOTTY TODDY!" over and over until you're dragged away by Illuminati Special Forces that Ole Miss controls and awaits to take over the world.

I guess you forgot about 99. You know -- the highest rated team in MS in 40 years. That was pretty convenient of you...
