Hitting was not WHY we lost...but it ain't as if we turned into Louisville Cardinals circa 2007 tonight either....
We ended up 7 for 33 for a .213 clip tonight. We did have some big hits, but 2 were solo homers. The 2 run triple which should have been a homer now does come back into play somewhat. How you ask? Because by them ruling it a triple, USC got to play in tight to cut down a run at the plate on and infield grounder, which they got from Brownlee, but bobbled and had to go to first to get the out. So yes, we got Bradford home and cannot assume anything different would have happened in the inning....except.....Had the shortstop not been in on the edge of the grass with Bradford already home, who is to say Browning hard hit grounder would not have squeezed through, putting him on with still just one out. Game of inches came into play in both instances. Ball hits 2 inch wide railing and falls back onto field. Shortstop is in on grass and in hole usually left open between 3rd and short. I know it is quirky to look at that way, but as I said in another thread, my mind is boggled after this one.
The difference in the game though....was hitting in key situations with game on the line....by USC...to at least get it tied. They got to our starter by hitting the ball late in a game. Our guys were shell shocked when they came to the plate in the ninth, and they put absolutely no pressure on Matt Price, who, by the way, is a real closer, so Carolina's hitting won the game because they pressured our Junior and Senior pitchers into making mistakes.... When our guys start to intimidate the opponents pitchers because they put pressure on them, then maybe we can overcome sloppiness. Obviously USC had the nutts to do that tonight.
