I say Tico's, but still wanted some opinions. Taking the wife out Friday night and may want to try something new.

I was disappointed in Shapley's the last 2 times I've been. Hard to put the finger on it. Just felt like the quality has slipped.

Been to Ruth's Chris twice and it's pretty damn good for a chain. Service was superb.

The best steak I've ever had was a Tico's, but the last few times have been just okay. I've never been impressed with Shapley's. Very disappointed in El Derado. Ruth's Chris may be the answer.

Their steaks are great, but so is their fish, veal and whatever they have on special.

Also, the atmosphere is head and shoulders above Tico's.

They have an outide deck now. And I agree on Ruth's Chris..steaks are probably the best. And from what I understand Tico use to be a chef at a Ruth's Chris somewhere back in the day and that's why his steaks are somewhat similar. And to add to Robbie, totally agree on Walker's as the best overall dining. Atmosphere is great, especially if the patio is open and not a bad appetizer or entree on the menu. Their encrusted tuna is rediculous.

It has been pretty subpar the last few times I have eaten there. I ate at Char about of month ago and had a great steak. I used to not like Char but it really surprised me.

The best steak I have ever eaten, ANYWHERE is at Ried Pierces in Byram. You will not be disappointed!

I still say Shapley's has the best steak I've ever eaten . . . twice. Tico's tasted like rubber & *** drenched in salty butter.

but I do agree Walker's the best "atmosphere" in Jackson. I really like it's casual feel but with great food. And their fish/seafood is so much better than anywhere else.

Tico's used to be the best steak in Jackson. Last time I went, it was very average. I would go with Char or Ruth's Chris.

but **** it's expensive. I ordered the special "NY Strip" thinking surely it was less than the filet and with nothing topped on it and it was $42.

perhaps leans that way.....at least in my opinion....

of walkers, shapleys, and mayflower, shapleys is the only one that advertises to the public.....not that is a bad thing.....its just that when you find a restaurant like walkers that has to expand by buying the building next door because business is so good, that says something.....

steaks:
walkers
shapleys
ticos

seafood:
walkers
mayflower
bon ami

this all a matter of opinion though.....

edited to add that i still cannot figure out how to reply while drinking mixed drinks.....this was in reply to dawgstudents reply to shapleys.....

I was just there this past Sunday evening.
The best part, the check was picked up by a former Rebel basketball player.

From what I understand he was transferred from the New Orleans store to Jackdon and eventually opened up his own place. I worked at Tico's for a few years, and that is the only restaurant I ever worked at that I did not get tired of their food. We try and go to dome of the nicer steakhouses anytime we go out of town, and have hit quite a few. Tico's steak can hold his own against many of them. People have tried for years to get in there and get his steak business but he refuses to change from the company he gets them from. One thing I do know, he has made a fortune off of that place

Oh, and number 4, you can sit out at Mint's patio and have drinks while you wait. It's usually a good change of scenery.

We gave Ely's a try last December and have been back twice. The filet is the most tender I've found in Jackson. You can almost cut it with a butter knife. Excellent flavor, too. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm told it is owned by the guy who started Shapley's and then sold it. Whatever, Ely's in Ridgeland next to the Parker House gets my vote for best steak in Jackson.

And I think Ely's (not sure how to spell it) is run by Mark Shapley's brother. Of course, I don't like Shapley's and I also totally agree that NICK's SUCKS!!!

But she does claim to post here. I don't believe her though. And I can look at what I want to.

Atmosphere... yes. The best seafood is the Mayflower. Nothing in this city comes close to there soft shell, speckled trout, and lemon. However, Walker's does have the best redfish dish I have ever had. And to come full circle, the Mayflower's atmosphere is unique and right up there with Walkers. You just have to be extremely brave to use the bathroom (and to risk the gang rapes and murder of course).
