Where can you get the best steak in the Jackson area?

1A - Shapleys - their sauce is off the chain - Sidebar: I used to hate Shapleys because I ordered the porterhouse in high school before prom (dont know if it is till on the menu, but at that time it was a random cut of meat and varied by weight, the bigger it got the more expensive it got and you had no say in the cut) and they brought me out a 52 oz steak. Of course I had to eat the whole thing so I wouldnt get heckled...I felt like I was in The Great Outdoors with the Ol 96'er. Speaking of 96, that is how much my part of the meal cost thanks to that abnormally large cut of meat. Add in my date's filet and I did like 160 in damage that night....which was a fortune for me at that time. Needless to say I felt miserable the entire night. I didn't go back to Shapleys for years, but now that I have returned, I love it. Their steak is very rich, tons of flavor.

1B - Ruth's Chris - same as Shapley's - a very rich steak - really can't beat it. Sidebar: their tuna dish is incredible. I find myself ordering the tuna at super nice restaurants now, because I feel like I can make a damn good steak on my own. You can rarely beat a tuna steak at a top notch establishment.

2 - Walker's - for all the reasons already stated - this is #1 in atmosphere among the fine dining places IMO.

3 - Parker House

4 - Tico's - I really don't care for Tico's. The last 2 times I went the steaks were just bland. It is good meat and all, but it seems like they just dash a little salt and pepper and a little butter and they are done with it. Some people prefer their steaks that way, but I like mine to have a little more flavor.

I have not been to Ely's but plan to go soon. I haven't been to Crechale's in ages but I remember it being pretty good.

I have eaten once at Char, twice at Ruth's Chris, 5 or 6 times at Tico's, 10-15 times at AJ's, 5-6 times at Shapleys, 5-6 times at the Parker House. Two Rivers probably has a better filet than any of them.

I have eaten at Walkers, but never had a steak there.</p>
Edited to remind people that Nicks sucks ***.

I had a bad *** freakin steak at Nicks. But that is my favorite restaurant in Jackson. I used to work at Richey's in Starkville. The fillet there is pretty damn good if you use the chateau sauce.

I have been to the new location now several times and was impressed. I even had the steak, it was better than that plate flying hot butter at Tico's.

Last time I went to Nicks it was on Lakeland Drive in Jackson. They brought me a plate that was as big as the rims on an NBA star's car. My filet was sitting dead in the middle. They piled the potato salad (they didn't serve baked potato, but that's okay)on top of the steak (as if there was no room on the plate for it). I later realized it was to attempt to conceal the taste of the worst piece of meat in the history of steaks. Iconsidered complaining, but the waiterhad already been rude and snobby, so I never said a word. I've never been back.

Maybe it was a bad night for them. But the food was horrible and the service sucked, and I will NEVER go back.

My service at Parker House, Shapleys, Two Rivers, AJ's, Walkers, Ruth Chris, Char has always been top-notch.

Such was the case at Two Rivers one night. My wife and I were invited out by my parents to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We decide to go to Two Rivers because we heard great things about it. I got the idea to call ahead and ask if there is a wait. I'm told there is a 30 minute wait as we were coming from Madison I thought no problem. I then asked the receptionist on the phone can I put my name on the list we will be there in 15 minutes. She said sure and took down my first and last name.

We get to Two Rivers, and the owner Johnny Stewart (I was later told), asked how many were in our party. I told him 4 and my first and last name and asked how much longer it would be. He told me 45 minutes. I explained that I called ahead. He said they didn't allow people to put their name on the list without being present. I asked him to check the book and see if she had written me down. He said it didn't matter if she did, they dont allow it. I said ok fair enough and we decided to wait in the bar after all we had already driven to Canton. As we entered the bar room, someone was cleaning off a table and I asked him "is this table available?" He said yes.

My parents and my wife sit down at the table I go to the bar to get some drinks. When I get back to the table with our drinks, the owner is coming to the table with a 4 top and said "What are yall doing here?" to us. I explained our interaction with the waiter/bussboy. He tells me no the table is not available and that we would have to get up. After we had been sitting there long enough for me to get drinks mind you a good 5 minutes. I then calmly explained that he could take the drinks I had just purchased back to the bar and retrieve my credit card for me. He told me to get it myself. I did so and none of us took one sip out of our drinks and left, went to Parker House and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Since then (2004) I have not and will not be back. I work part-time in a restaurant. I know how customers can be. But I don't think I have ever met anyone as rude as that mother 17-er who owns Two Rivers. 17 him and the horse he rode in on.

I have always had great service at Two Rivers. However, if I had been treated like that, I wouldn't go back either. I don't blame you.

and got mad because they moved you? That makes sense. If there is a hostess, you can't just sit down at a table when a busboy clears it.

We were in the BAR. At a BAR table. At several other restaurants, Tico's, Outback, Chili's, Bonefish (just examples off the top of my head) bar tables are treated as first come first serve. Including the one I work at part time. I asked the table cleaner if the table was available for us to sit at. The table cleaner said yes. I therefore assumed it was like the majority of restaurants with bar tables. Most of the time Bar tables are not sat like other restaurant tables (in order to give more room to the bar).

Like I said I work part-time in a restaurant. I'm sure in his restaurant Mr. Stewart was correct and that's how they do things. But, he was rude and didn't empathize with us at either the hostess stand OR the table. An owner should have sense enough to be a bit more diplomatic at least once, if not BOTH times. He had two chances to be nice to us. 17 it, if he can't be nice once out of two chances why should I give him a third chance? There's too many other restaurants in Jackson that are trying hard, I'm not gonna give one that doesn't try hard a third chance.
