Thankfully TO and Perlmann provided the leadership needed to move NU to the Big 10 and away from the Big 12 way back when. TO and especially Perlmann were not perfect in their actions in leadership of NU, but for this conference move NU has a far brighter future than otherwise.
The Big Ten is happy you had these people making the decision to join. Worked out for both parties and I'm happy you're with us.
I had read once that TO had always wished Nebraska was in the Big Ten, because he viewed it as a better, classier league with universities that were just better academically than the Big 8 and then Big 12. He was right, but I do know that us leaving the Big 12 had a lot to do with Texas trying to push everyone else around, and, later, it came out that Texas was specifically trying to screw over Nebraska football.
I was happy to see us join the Big Ten, and, problems that our program have encountered aside (problems we likely would have had anyway), I am certain it was the right move. Academically, other than the Ivy League, there is no conference like it in terms of prestige. Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin, MSU, tOSU, Illinois, Iowa, Penn State, Minnesota, Purdue, Indiana, and now Maryland and Rutgers, are all fantastic universities, and Nebraska needs to play catch-up to get anywhere near their level of prestige (but we'll get there!). That, and the shrewd business savvy of the league will yield us buckets of money going forward. I thought I read that the inclusion of Rutgers and Maryland was specifically to open up access of the BTN to east coast markets? Smart.
I'm glad we got out of a league where we were doing worse and worse, and joined one that was happy to have us where we will make a lot more money and have greater access to academic growth.
I don't believe this article for one second. The embarrassment of athletic/research riches and far superior academic prestige aside, the fan base and University officials simply aren't happy with the move.
They won't say it out loud (it's a very silent majority), but it's obvious we'd move back to the Big Xii in a heartbeat if we had the chance.
If true it must be a VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY silent majority, because I haven't heard one person say that they wish NU was back in the Big XII. It's comparing a Ford Escort to a Rolls Royce.
Interesting article. It's pretty clear that Nebraska made the right choice in moving to the B1G for many reasons, but I think all conferences are going to get pinched in the next 10-15 years as the television industry continues to evolve. The saving grace of the conference will be putting a quality product on the field, not necessarily their existing deal with the Big Ten Network.

Were discussing this article and the NCAA finance numbers that were gathered by USA Today in a course I'm in here at UNL, and it really is pretty staggering how far out ahead the B1G and SEC are. Just to illustrate the point a little more clearly, of the top 24 (excluding private universities) revenue generating universities in 2015, 18 of them are from the SEC or the B1G. Thats no coincidence. We are right where we need to be.
