Depending on what you are looking for, East Memphis would be a good choice.

Easy access to the LB from either city streets or the interstate. Many of the options listed in the dining thread are in East Memphis. Within a 5 to 10 block area around Clark Tower your will find really good restaurants, shopping and hotels. It is safe. The dining choices are too numerous to list. Most Every thing from Folk's Folly, Interim, Huey's, Corky's, Ruth Chris, Owen Brenins,Blue Plate, Buckley's, fast food etc. Hotels range from Hampton to Holiday to Hilton to Double Tree etc. Shopping is everything from Home Depot to fine jewelry. East Memphis is also close to Midtown and Germantown. Downtown is safe with many options too. If I were taking a family I would probably stay in East Memphis. If I was going to party, I would stay downtown. All the suburbs are safe.

Everything in downtown will be booked due to New Years Eve. They usually fill up a year in advance. Any of the bigger hotels will be hosting NYE events. I would recommend Poplar Ave at I-40 area. Hotels are nice as it is the financial district and puts you in the relative area (6 miles).

Yeah, I'm at a Double Tree out Poplar Ave. I booked it a week or so ago, and they had some 'double rooms' available for like $225 a night. Wouldn't be a bad plan to split one of those with someone. You'd have someone to split cabs with back and forth to the game/NYE party as well.

Just something to think about.

I've stayed there many times, very nice...

Courtyard Memphis Downtown appears to have some rooms @ $199 a night.

It is the site of the original Piggly Wiggly, if that doesn't close the deal nothing will. Trolly stops across the street and takes you to Beale St for a $1. Ton's of good restaurants around, you can't miss staying there. I usually stay there for 1 or 2 Ole Miss games a year, I was there for Mizzu this year. Again, very nice Courtyard, best I have ever stayed at.

This is at Goodman and I-55 with tons and tons of restaurants, bars, shopping, etc. Good luck, safe travels to all, Let's Go and Hail STATE!!!!

If you stay two nights, more downtown hotels become available. The Doubletree across from The Peabody has rooms if you will book two nights.
