In a manufacturing plant in Tupelo walking an assembly line for duplicating the process with the company's corporate engineers. A line worker asked had I heard about a plane hitting the world trade center. Once the corporate engineers grasp the reality they began discussing how they were going to get back home. We quickly wrapped up the meeting. I drove back home to watch everything instead of going to the office.

Chadwick Apartments in Starkville. A roommate woke me up to a new world right after the South Tower was hit.
At work. Had flown back from an Argentina project 2 days prior. Was in an online chat at someone said a plane hit the first tower. I thought it was a small plane again, but someone else said "oh, the tower looks like its leaning". I left. Got home as the 2nd hit. Went to the school, got the kids. That day marked a hard turn in my first marriage as I was numb the next week and my wife complained about my mood.
9th grade science class. Announcement was made over the intercom. When that class was out, I went to a classroom where I knew that teacher would have one of the school TV’s on a rolling cart.
Was at work in Amory Ms. wife called me and told me that a plane had hit the WTC and I needed to see it. I didn’t have internet access at that time but we had a small tv/ vcr combo in the conference room that we watched safety videos on. It didn’t even have an antenna so I rigged an antenna out of a coat hanger and sat and watched the second plane hit with a couple of other people. We were all busy but at least one person stayed in front of that little tv all day to update the others as we would pass through. Very surreal day.
Mitchell Memorial Library. At the time they had a grid of TVs that stayed on the news. I saw a crowd gathered around them, walked over, and saw the first images of smoke coming from the towers.
I was making delivery and heard that “ small plane had hit North Tower”
Got back to Yazoo in time to see second plane hit.
Seconds after Pentagon was hit, our electricity went off (still don’t know why).
About 8 of us sat around table looking at each other with the sunlight coming through the windows.
After several minutes of total silence, someone finally spoke up and said “ Well, I guess they didn’t get the Chemical Plant” (Yazoo City has an Ammonia Nitrate plant).
We were all waiting for the “Shock Wave” to hit.
The electricity came back on and started watching coverage again, until noon when all aviation was grounded.
Had to go get sprayer ready for cotton defoliation, since crop dusters weren’t going to be able to fly.

To add to this the weekend immediately following I had to drive to Arlington Virginia to pick up a motorcycle that I had bought. Going in a diesel pickup. There was hardly any traffic on the roads but the gas stations were rationing fuel and would only let you purchase something like $20 at most stops. I just remember stopping at so many gas stations getting fuel that it extended the trip by hours.
One of the most surprising things about that day to me was the number of people who died compared to how many I thought would die as we were watching on TV that morning . I know nothing about what it's like to work downtown in a big city but I honestly thought there would be 30,000+ dead in New York . There were a lot of genuine heroes that day should never be forgotten .

I was a staffing agent for a temp company in Memphis and we took turns coming in at 5:30 am to answer calls. That happened to be my day. One of my coworkers called after the first plane hit saying she would be late because she was watching the news. I turned on a radio we had and heard about the second plane. Like Dawgbite we had a tv for safety videos so I rigged up a coat hanger antenna and both staff and workers spent most of the day watching things unfold.
My clearest memories other than the events are walking outside to a cool crisp September day with cloudless beautiful blue skies. Also the eerie silence of no airplane traffic around Memphis.

I trust very little of what any government tells me because they’ve proven incredibly untrustworthy throughout history. But it’s very rare that I actually know if they’re lying about something and in this case I’m not gonna go beyond the idea that the guys who did it are the guys who did it for the reasons they said.

9th grader and was preparing for a morning football workout when our coach told us to go to a meeting in the school gym. That was not weird because we were a religious school we regularly had morning devotions. I can still remember the feeling of the gym that morning, and I often tell the kids I teach now it was the first time in my whole life that I saw adults genuinely afraid.
In the gym at Madison Central. Heard them come on the speakers to tell teachers to turn tv's off. Not a single teacher turned it off that day. Every class we were watching.

On the phone with a customer who said apparently and small plane hit the WTC tower.....turned on the tv, and thought, that was no small plane.....I remember listening and watching and seeing that second jet enter the pic frame, and thinking, there is no way........I was glued to the news the rest of the day.
That was something that I genuinely thought, in my lifetime, we would never see an act of violence like that.
Reading today, all the acts of heroism and sacrifice, and service to others from that day....it's humbling

Good for them. It's important for kids to understand at some level that there is true evil in the world, and we should be thankful we live where we do with the freedoms we have... and why we need to protect it. Obviously kids don't need to see everything about that horrific day, but especially at the high school level, being aware of the reality out there is good for them.
I was in 5th grade... We were outside at recess and all of the sudden the tornado sirens start going off, no cloud in the sky. All the teachers herd of back into the gym and keep us there for ~2 hours. Once we got back into our classrooms the teacher explains what happened and why these weird people drove a plane into the towers. My uncle lives fairly close to the towers and there was a brief panic from my mom when we couldn't get ahold of him.

On I-55 in Southaven on my way to work. At that time it was the small plane report. I got to work and turned on the TV and saw the pictures and the second plane fly into the other tower. It is still unbelievable that anyone could think any of that was a good plan for their big picture view. Kinda like dumping diesel into two anthills and setting them a blaze and thinking you solved the fire ant problem.

But I remember attendance went back to normal at church a week or two later. It didn't take long.

Durham NC. I had flown in the day before for work and was supposed to fly home that evening. Needless to say I had to drive my rental car from Durham to Memphis that afternoon/evening. Got home at about 3 am.
I was listening to Doug Colson and Chuck Stinson yammer on 620AM at work in Jackson, when they mentioned something about a plane crash in New York. I also had the old B.O.M.B. open when folks were posting about it. So, I hit Yahoo and Fox News to see what was happening. No one else in my 30+ person office knew, so I told the VP's secretary and went get the push cart with the 27" TV setup in the conference room. Spent most of the day trying to get any feed online--the internet practically shutdown that day--and watching the coverage on the TV in the conference room. Called and told my wife, and she panicked, wanting to go get my oldest who had just started kindergarten, but ultimately remaining home with our 3 year old. We only had the one TV, and she didn't want him to see anything, so she kept it on Bob the Builder and crap like that all day and ended up watching replays on the news with me that evening.
Also, living in Laurelwood at the time, it was hard to forget the eerie silence around as no planes were leaving the Jackson airport that day and several days afterwards.

For the younger ones here who may not clearly remember or remember at all that day.
The feeling from the immediate moment that stands out for me was the worry that we were actually under attack. For many reasons this country has not had to face a direct, sustained attack from a foreign invader in many, many years. No matter where you were that morning, you felt like you could be in the middle of a war like scenario at any moment.
We’ve been fortunate to not have to face that feeling or reality, but we shouldn’t ever forget it is a real possibility all over the world.

That’s where I was too. Watching the bank of TVs. Then headed to class. I am trying to recall, I think our professor tried to shut down any discussion and carry on
me too. When the second plane hit, I left work and went and watched it all at the house. Terrible.
We had a group of managers in Chicago that had flown up on the company plane . When all flights got grounded they tried to rent a van to get back to Mississippi but were too late and all were rented. Ended up buying a van to get home. I'd bet there were hundreds of stories like this around the country in the following days .
