It depend on the Coach. For Fleck I would say Oregon, for a guy like Herman, I would ND.

Notre Dame isn't the destination it once was for recruits. The team has had a handful of good seasons but isn't at the once almighty level it used to be.

Not sure Oregon is either but if someone is gonna shell out $10m a season for their head coach - I'm game.

Notre Dame still routinely has top 10-15 recruitring classes. According to SBnation, ND's classes ranks 13th over the last 5 years. Ahead of A&M, MSU, Florida, Oregon, Miami, UCLA, Wash, Nebraska and PSU. I don't think talent is the problem.

ND hasn't been a dominant team in decades.

I'd say Oregon is the better job. Great part of the country. Great facilities. Phil Knight's money and sponsorship helps. Much less stringent academic standards. Should be able to get most any recruit in the school. Not so at ND.

Eugene, OR is quite the distance for the family and friends of a potential recruit. The FB Ducks have been coming out to the Mideast and Midwest every other year of late (Michigan State, Nebraska), but that PAC-12 North division geographically is OUT THERE!

Easier to have success at Oregon. Nike money, less academic restrictions, usually plays with a spread offense in a league that doesn't believe much in defense.

ND expects greatness every year even if they are a 500 team on paper.

Fleck isn't going to either.

what might become a problem for ND: recruiting. As USD points out, NC continues to draw great talent; however, that may change.

Over the last five years, the big ten has become the conference with the best collection of coaches. Today, with Brohm going to Purdue...it got even better.

Suddenly, ND has to compete in its backyard for players against Myer, Harbaugh, and now Lovie Smith, who absolutely will draw talent. On an academic level, ND still has to compete for kids with NW. Now, for the first time in a long time, ND has someone in its own state to compete with at Purdue.

If that was not bad enough....

With the reemergence of PSU, ND will have to compete with Penn State and I can tell you as a DC resident, Under Armour is really trying to make Maryland the east-coast Oregon. They are getting better and MD is drawing in huge talent from local national powerhouses like that have not in the past. Rutgers is dumping money into its football program at a pace faster than any in the country.

Let's not forget, USC is getting its scholarships back, which competes for socal and hawaii with ND and unlike even 5 years ago, the state of Texas, wherre ND has gotten some stars, now has: AM, Baylor, TCU, Houston, and Texas.

It's true, all the top programs have to compete nation wide for top talent, but IMO, it seems like ND gets hurt from every angle with the emergence of these schools.

from a pure football perspective, Oregon.

Better recruiting base, more support, higher budget with better facilities and less alumni problems (you just have to worry about one alum -- P. Knight)

I don't know if I agree with that statement.
  • What do you mean by better recruiting base? As I stated before, ND is always in the top 15 in recruiting classes.
  • More support from whom? Admin, fan base, faculty, alumni?
  • In regards to budget, everything I found indicated that ND spends in the top 5 in regards to recruiting and football, where as Oregon was ranked #24 in football expenditures.
  • I will agree that Oregon probably has the best facilities in the country. However, Notre Dame's facilities rank near the top.

I personally agree that the Oregon is probably a better gig, I just don't know if I agree with your reasoning.

Around recruiting, Oregon's proximity to California is a huge advantage from a talent perspective.

But the biggest edge, is you dont have to deal with all of the alumni issues which go on at ND, all you have to worry about is Phil Knight. Fans support the team regardless of record and appreciate success.
