A) Selmon never reached out to Curt Cignetti in 2023.

B) Cignetti was interested, but Selmon never talked to him or wasn't impressed after talking to him.

C) Selmon reached out to Cignetti, but Cig said "No thanks. I'd rather coach at Indiana."

Folks trying to put this info out there that we talked to Cignetti are just trolling.

The reality of the situation is actually much worse.......we didn't even have the forethought to talk to a guy like him. We wanted the young guys, the flash, the showtime.

Anybody with any sense can see that the play is to go for the experienced, older coach at a place like MSU.

Goat is spot on here. I don't think we even considered Cignetti, and thats worse than passing on him after talking to him.

Every time we have a coaching search, the MSU fan base is divided into the following:

People who want an "MSU guy"
People who want a flashy coordinator or G5 coach
People who are delusional and think we can pull a successful sitting P4 coach

The guy that has worked his *** off and worked his way up through the ranks hardly gets a mention. That was Cignetti this last round. At one point it was Saban.

Mullen wasn't really older though.
All about risk. Sure if you can find a guy that served 8 years under an elite HC, and was promoted during that time, and he's willing to come here in the modern era, go for it. Stands to reason he'd know how to coach and develop, as he's seen it up close. Not to mention Mullen was in no way a hot name, kind of came out of nowhere.

But, you still have to worry about them jumping ship. With a 55+ guy, that is greatly minimized.

Low iq boosters would run Cignetti off or never let him get hired in the first place. They need quislings who follow orders

I don't know that we'd have been able to get Cignetti, as he may have chosen IU over us anyway, but we did have Willie Fritz there right in front of us.

I do believe, had Cohen still been AD, Fritz gets the job. But obviously Selmon was looking for different things. Overall are we in a better place? I do not know. Obviously Cohen had his faults and his time here had just run its course. Maybe had we hired a competent AD who gets Fritz, it's a win for everyone.

Selmon knew who he was hiring before he ever fired Arnett. He just had to go through the motions of a coaching search.
I think he thought it'd be easy to improve off 2023 and that he'd be long gone by now.

Our football problems are just so deep and span so many different things.

Agree. Assistant coach hires do work in the SEC. But if you look at them, virtually all are guys with several years as coordinators at the elite level and most have national championships on their resumes.

Bad formula is a guy who does less with more, OU in the big 12….moving to a State in the sec where you to do more with less.
