i don't think it will because he is the best candidate. More to the point he has no experience to my knowledge in the field. AmI wrong? I would like to know how he got inserted into the conversation in the first place. I dont hate the guy, he's actually who i would vote for if we had to pick someone with no experience, but why do that?
this ain't MC. We'd better damn well sure not hire somebody to be an SEC AD who has NO EXPERIENCE working in athletics.
Id rather us hire one of our own than a Templeton clone that his own fan base wants him fired ASAP.
We need a guy who has some but not limited to the following characteristics:
creative - we are MSU. We need a guy who can create or build upon our brand and market it to the people. We don't sell ourselves yet.
energetic - he can be young or old.
He needs to be able to raise funds/grow profit.
He needs to be able to build on the momentum or create his own momentum.
He needs to be a CEO type with a plan for growing and expanding. I have no idea what Whit Hughes is like, but if he is a great business person who can be creative in a stiff market, then I have no problem with that (if he is the best we can find or get). I want the best person available regardless of gender, creed, race, etc.

He is successful as a business man because he knows about the business he is in, which is real estate. Perfect example the USFL. He thought "oh anybody can do it!" We all see how that went. Mainly because he competed with the NFL. We are competing with Alabama, FLorida, LSU, Georgia, etc.

Donald trump has lots of businesses if i'm not mistaken. They aren't all dealing with real estate. Besides I didn't say Donald Trump. I said Donald Trump type meaning a guy who is a good business man.

At the AD position business sense (growing a business) is more important than athletic sense/experience. Ask LT. He wasn't forward thinking at all. He lived year by year and kept us within budget.
I personally would prefer a guy with great business skills who also happened to have Athletic experience, but if I have to settle with one or the other, i pick business over athletic any day for AD.

Like those snobby obnoxious prep bastards or not. They are generally intelligent and know people. Knowing people helps out a lot when raising funds which is a big part of the AD's job.
It will help that Whit was in athletics here...he's smart....as long as he surrounds himself with the right people, he probably would be a good hire. He definitely loves MSU and that's the most important aspect of these candidates. They BETTER love this school.
How old is he - 35? What if there's another candidate that's 34? Does that automatically make that guy better than Whit?

My opinion - hire the guy who's ready now - Strick - and hire Whit as Associate AD and we're good to go for the next 20 years.

My point was General business sense is not a substitute for Specific business sense. A person who can run a restaurant might not be able to run a construction company. I feel like you think there is magical "business sense" out there that if someone has it then they will be successful.

pain's def of "business sense": forward thinking, creative, motivational, trying to grow his brand, increasing profits, etc. Many people have that "sense". They can take any product and make it better. they can take any business and make it more profitable. They can market their brand and make it more noticeable.
