People love getting these as gifts, such as end-of-year bonuses. In addition to Bill Clinton, my collection also includes Barack Obama (best president ever) and I even have Si from Duck Dynasty but get this (!) - it grows as his beard LOL. If this was not a great gift idea in addition to being lovely home accents it would not have been around since the '70s OP.

Chia pets have been around since the late 70's and were made famous by an alloying commercial and jingle. According to Wikipedia, they sell about 500,000 per year and they are only marketed at Christmas. I would only give one as a gag gift if even then.
I'm an old fart, so of course I remember the Chia Pet coming out in the 70's (if not before). One mans garbage is another mans gold, I suppose. But I don't care what anybody says, that right there is funny.
