I was curious what top guys are currently making so I found this list:

The list is the Top 20 highest paid coaches in 2021.

Cal is highest at $8M/year.
It has Archie Miller at $3,350,000/year.

Are we ready, willing and able to pay a coach what appears to be the going rate of $3M+/year?

Also, if we want one of the coaches on the Top 20 list, we'd likely have to pay them significantly more than $3M/year.

Can we afford it right now?

Couple of observations.
1. This list is dated - multiple coaches on it were fired by the schools listed.
2. Given that Mack was the 7 th highest paid at 4M+, I’d say say that yes, UofL can pay significantly more than 3M a year.

Can UofL afford to continue to let the athletic program that has been it’s flagship for the last 40 years continue on its current path to mediocrity?

Some additional things I see, which should be scary.

There are some bad to average at best coaches in that list.

It tells me you gotta pay and you might end up getting in a bidding war for a mediocre dude if he's on that list. You gotta factor in potential buy-outs?

And the #7 guy tells us this all comes with no guarantees!

@zipp make sense of it all please!!!!!!

Barring the unexpected--the return of Jurich or the emergence of someone equally impactful--I'll lay you dollars to donuts that the next basketball coach we hire will be cheaper than Mack's $4 million.

And that's for various reasons... The first is recent history. Every highly paid person hired in U of L athletics the last few years has been cheaper than his predecessor.

Feel free to take your guess why, The skeptics argue that syncs up with the larger plan to defund athletics--which checks if true. Or if you don't set your sights high, you're settling for cheaper replacements because that's who you're capable of hiring.

And then there's my reasoning which is our pot of available money keeps declining. Just because we paid Mack $4 million doesn't mean we can hire a $4 million replacement. Our cash balances are down 10X that amount since Tyra gave Mack his contract. (Maybe we should ask Tyra what we can afford today...)

It's a financial mess that's spilling over to big decisions and issues in athletics. Which is why money is so important...

I’d give 10-1 that if the next coach is KP - he’s making north of 3.5M.

I think we can probably afford anyone we want. This is UofL basketball. Boosters know the YUM will blowup again when the product is better.

My top 3 HC candidates (realistic.. IMHO)-
1) Brad Stevens - I know it sounds crazy but I think he's getting tired of the NBA. If, he has an itch to return to college then what better fit than UofL? I think, his situation is actually fairly similar to Pitino when during Denny's last year.
2) Nate Oats - They have been really solid since he's been at Alabama. This year is a little bit of a rebuild (I think they lost 3 to the NBA last year) at they're still exciting and have beaten some good teams.
3)Eric Musselman - Had success everywhere he's been in college. Exciting style of ball. Can recruit. NBA head coach at a fairly young age. Passionate!!!

There’s a less than zero chance of stevens becoming UofL’s coach. First because he’s the president of the freaking Celtics making an estimated 6-8M and second, because the only person in the history of UofL athletics that had the balls to swing for the fences like that was Jurich.

I like your ambition. Unfortunately, that left town with most of the money we used to have...

Steven’s was reportedly offered 10 million to coach IU.

Keep in mind Pitino was available when Jurich needed a basketball coach. There is no one at that level available. It gets very expensive to hire coaches away from really good situations. They have all the leverage which drives up the price. Nobody on these coaching lists screams 6-8 million like Pitino.

Nate Oats and Musselman haven’t done enough to support that kind of money. Scott Drew or Jay Wright or Bennett have but only Drew is a legit option. He may be ready to leave Baylor.
