Who else thinks that US Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe had to have mixed emotions

about seeing Roddick make the Wimbledon finals and play Federer so close and so long? Now all Roddick has to do in the next 4 days is travel to Croatia and get ready to play two important best-of-5 Davis Cup matches on an indoor clay surface that couldn't possibly be any more different than the grass at Wimbledon. I think if I'm McEnroe, I try to get Mardy Fish to make the trip just in case Roddick can't go.

It's hard to imagine that he could have made such a dramatic change in surfaces in such a short time, especially considering his very tough match yesterday. I'm not feeling too good about our chances though. Fish is a decent player, but he's a journeyman, and Blake really looks to be on the downward slide of his career lately. Not to mention, we finally get a player to start playing good on clay (Roddick made the 2nd week of the French Open for the first time in his career this year) and now he can't play.

Edit to add that if Roddick pulled out of Davis Cup, it's pretty certain that he just wasn't going to be able to do it physically. This is the first Davis Cup match he's missed in about 6 years (going off of memory here).
