Who is more welcomed on MSU's campus? Polk or Sherrill?

From reading some of the posts below, and I've read how several people were happy that Sherrill came back and helped out, while it appears that most on here do not want Polk any where near the program.<div>

He handled his exit professionally and there's never been any quesiton about his loyalty to MSU. Polk wasn't even that loyal to us when he was our coach (more concerned with fighting the NCAA than winning games). And the way he handled his exit is unforgivable in my book. Especially seeing as how he's never even once hinted at an apology.

When Polk left the first time, it was viewed as his great goodbye. He named his successor, who ended up an ok coach for us even though he left for UF and got fired a few years later. He could have came around to any MSU athletic event and would have been a God. He probably would've been a very serious contender for the AD job when Templeton left, moreso than he was when Byrne was hired.

Then he went to UGA. Then he came back and had an awful set of seasons except for a 4 game stretch in 2007. Then he said he was leaving again when he saw he didn't have what it took anymore and his team was a disaster. Then he pissed and whined about not being able to name his successor (again) and basically cut most ties to the university.

When Sherrill left, he didn't take another job a year or 2 later. He was humble about his coaching abilities at the time, and he knew he had destroyed what he built here. He didn't whine about not naming his successor.

Jackie is welcome every day at MSU in my opinion.

but as far as their departure there is no comparison in the class that one showed leaving and the lack of class shown by the other. I do believe Sherrill just wants to help out where he can and see the football program do well going forward but I don't think he would have any thought or desire at this point to ever try to exert any control over the program.

On the other hand, given that Polk somehow feels like he has "earned the right" to dictate how our baseball program is run until the day he dies, I still can't quite feel real comfortable when he starts "hanging" around the program.

Didn't Sherrill basically have to leave based on the 01-03 seasons? Putting aside the NCAA stuff, the MSU football team was a trainwreck in 2003. As far as taking another job a year or 2 later, are you serious or being sarcastic because I wasn't sure.<div>

run itself but then, as Patdog said, he was "(more concerned with fighting the NCAA than winning games)" and allowed it to go into the tank when I think just a half-assed effort could have kept us top-notch. People talk about how easy it is to recruit footballat the USC's, Bama's and Florida's. Well, Polk had our baseball program in that same situation and was coming off of a CWS appearance. With just a little effort he should have had a monster recruiting class. Instead, we have Powers, Adkins, Sneed and Cohen's gap-fillers. I won't even get into the temper-tantrums at the end.

Jackie on the other hand took a piece of **** and proved we could win even ifindian's are buried under the field. Also, his downfall didn't come from trying to let the program run itself while he went off and fought other battles. And, during his last couple of years here, he lost his mother, his brother and his wife was diagnosed with cancer. I can't blame the guy if his head wasn't 100% in the game after that. But, with that said, it was definitely time for him to move on when he did. Plus, if you've evertalked to Jackie after a game, he acts like a normal fan who was there to have a good time and enjoy the game. Polk's personality just doesn't seem that way.

is ridiculous. He embarrassed himself when he left, so the 17 what? He's still welcome in my book

Sherrill's last two teams were among the worst I've ever seen.We went on probation twice on his watch and still haven't recovered from no. 2. I still like the guy though.

So to answer your question, they should both be treated with respect.

futaba]He embarrassed himself when he left......
No he didn't. He embarrassed the school, the athletic department, and one of his own in John Cohen when he asked him to reject the job offer. If he wanted to grandstand against Greg B that is one thing, but removing all things from the school (his name from the stadium, his money to the school, etc) was NOT the way to do it. He didn't hurt Greg one tiny bit. He hurt the school, the players, John Cohen, and the fan base. THAT is what I will never forgive him of. I don't care if he spit on Greg B.....his treatment of everyone else, and everything else, showed me who he really was.

Jackie wasn't pulled away kicking and screaming
Jackie didn't talk publicly about anyone associated w/MSU

I have forgiven Jackie for the shitties in 2002 and 2003, hard time finding forgiveness for Polk

Polk is not.

Sherrill just lost controll of his team at the end. He felt bad for it and wished He could have finished in a better way. I think He still wishes Our program well , considering He showed up and supported Mullen when given the chance.

Polk lost it earlier and put himself and his fight with the NCAA above what was best for MSU.Instead of wishing the program well like JWS did , Polk chose to be an enemy of MSU and of Our AD , who was simply trying to do his job in hiring the best coaches available to give Us the best chance of winning. Polk STILL holds this against Byrne.

If I were serving them both at a steak house , JWS's meal would be on the house while I would drag Polk's through the crack of my *** before serving him.

JWS is still the King. Polk can go choke on a cock......although He will probably enjoy it.

Jackie Sherril was introduced at a basketball game last year and got a roaring ovation.

I think Polk's croonies and the hardcore baseball crowd may say Polk, but I think MSU as a whole, definately Jackie.

When Sherrill was fired, he didn't act like an idiot, aside from maybe going off on Tommy West, but that's Jackie, and I actually think that incident was "the last straw" so to speak.

I think with Jackie, there has been more time for wounds to heal right now as opposed to Polk- I'm not saying that Polk's wounds will heal, and even with Jackie there are probably some that haven't healed. But time does heal wounds. I think Dan bringing him back some as well as his articles on BDJ, which I really enjoy, help his image as well.

I think with Polk, I do think that wounds will also heal, but it's going to take time, perhaps an apology, and I think that all of his current players have to be gone. Afterall, it wasn't but a couple of years ago that Jackie was fully accepted back I think. I do know that Polk comes around some as it is anyway. I don't feel bad for him because he brought a lot of this on himself. Jackie I can sympathize with a little more because of his family issues and the bogus witch hunt brought against him.
