1. Shaka Smart VCU- I think we would have to offer him a HUGE deal somewhre near $2 million to get him
2. Gregg Marshall Witacha State- Proven winner and great X's and O's guy
3. Chris Mooney Richmond- Led his team to the Sweet 16 last year lost some SRs struggling some this year and may be looking for a move.
4. Scott Drew Baylor- Maybe a pipe dream but I wouldn't mind going after him

Honorable Mention
Kermit Davis Jr- Middle Tennessee State (former MSU guy)
Butch Pierre (former MSU guy)
Larry Eustachy Southern Miss

Feel free to add your lists to this thread

after State wins a game again, Stans will be back to being a good coach. Shaka won't come to MS, I bet. Marshall would rather go to SC. Drew is already at Baylor. Why would he come here? The MTSU guy might be ok but I have never watched his teams play.

I almost threw my remote through the TV last night.

It was almost as bad as blowing that 17 point lead we blew last year in the last 5 minutes of the game @ Auburn.

I want to just see the talent pool we have a chance of getting.

Personally, I would offer a TON to Smart or Marshall if they dont want our job 17 them and keep looking for someone who doesn't have a problem making $1.5 million a year living in Mississippi.

Another name I'd hope we would at least ask to interview is Josh Pastner at Memphis. Im not sure what they pay him, but I think we could pay more. JMHO.

You called Kermit Davis "the MTSU guy" Have you not heard of Kermit Davis or know his history with MSU and elsewhere?

A instant upgrade from CUSA to the premier conference in basketball or accept a job in the Kentucky and everybody conference. Doubtful. We'd never outspend Memphis for a coach anyway.

My dad knows him and has known him for years. I know he played at State, his dad was a coach at State and he has coached at a lot of places.

Im just not sure if he is the answer to replacing Stans. I think we can do better and hire a bigger name from a better program and conference than the sunbelt. .

I know he played here and has coached in several places. Asst at State, Idaho, A&M, MTSU etc. SW MS. That doesn't mean I know enough about him towant him to be a candidate. I want to closely watch someone's team play before I say, "this guy will be a good coach for us."

Gotta dream big, we cant just say we are Mississippi State so we must settle for an assistant coach or a coach from a mid major team who went 19-13 this year.

State should try to lure Tubby Smith away from Minnesota. I know he's 60, but he wins and can get talent. He also has experience in the SEC, and I bet he would like to come back and take on Kentucky every year.

I am all for MSU writing a huge check for Shaka Smart. $2 million a year and he'd be a fool to turn us down.

ok so the same guy who constantly says, "who can we get better than stansbury" wants to go after an unproven memphis coach? how the hell can you say something like that? we have no reason to want him. he gets Memphis level talent because of who he coaches for, but he isn't even ranked. That's not dreaming big at all. And even if we could pay him more, he still wouldn't leave memphis for us.

I thought we are looking for new blood, someone who is going to be willing to BUILD up our program with their system. I just don't see Tubby as the answer. He is a little too old IMO, plus his best years were 15 years ago at Kentucky.

I think we should throw the bank at Shaka Smart. I really, REALLY like that guy. I think he would be able to recruit really good here in Mississippi and is a PR dream.

There is no way we would pull Pastner out of a program with much better support, tradition, facilities, recruiting environment, and soon to be better basketball conference.

That being said, I wouldn't want him. I see him as Stans 2.0. He's an all recruiting, players coach, and he needs big time help on the X's and O's. Maybe he just needs to grow up, but I don't think MSU is the place I want him to do that.

Here's what I like about him

 • He has been an assistant with great coaches (Lute Olson and John Calipari
 • He is young (34) and entergetic, fiery and is a competator
 • He can recruit and has great ins in Memphis
 • He is a GREAT PR guy who always hits homeruns on interviews
 • He has NBA connections (Damon Stoudamire is an assistant and Luke Walton volunteered earlier during the Lockout)

Who's the right hand man of Bohiem, Calipari, coach K, etc?

These guys need to be strongly considered. Might be more risky than a Gregg Marshall but they need to be on the list.

Ya know, he's been in the news a little bit. Cal is a one of a kind type of guy. Don't think a top assistant would be able to do what cal does. However, getting anybody from duke would be awesome. Coach k has forgotten more ball than Most other college coaches
