Realistically who is our backup point guard if Lowe is injured? Is it Chandler or JJ or Denzel?

Aberdeen but I also think he will be the starting 2.

I think Aberdeen starts also, so I think Johnson will be our primary second-string PG with Chandler backing up Aberdeen at the 2. I don't know though. There are so many options.

PG Lowe - Aberdeen - Johnson - Chandler
SG Aberdeen - Chandler - Oweh - Johnson
SF Oweh - Williams - Dioubate - Noah - Hawthorne
PF Dioubate - Jelavic - Garrison - Noah - Williams
C Garrison - Quaintance - Moreno - Potter

Legitimate case of being stacked 3-deep at every position.

This is my biggest concern at this point. Bad memories of us trying to inbound the ball and bring it up court without Butler last year under just a little bit of pressure.
I think our back up PG options are better than last season. We didn’t have Kriisa or Robinson to back up the lead guard position much of the time as well.

Yep, my biggest concern too. The worst parts of last season were the consequence of not having a healthy true point guard. And it appears we could be just one injury away from repeating that dilemma. Please let Lowe stay healthy.

That’s my only small issue with our roster. The final two spots went to unnecessary extra bigs (Potter and Hawthorne), when we had more need at guard.

I've assumed it would be a committee of Aberdeen, Johnson, Chandler, and even Oweh. But the more I think about it, Pope might want Aberdeen, Johnson, or Chandler to focus on that role. I expect us to play with tremendous pace, and no one will probably be able to play over 25 minutes. This means there's at least 15 minutes of PG play available. It would help to alleviate a bit of the log jam we have on the wing.

People are sleeping on Chandler too much. I think he’ll play the point fairly often and will be the knock down shooter everyone is looking for. I like the way that he moves his feet and that you can tell he’s always thinking, calculating. I think he’s a perfectionist. He’s also tall and decently athletic. He will make for a good distributor, with the option to shoot, and a good defender out front. I think he’s a star in the making.

THIS was the exact type preseason talk and maybe the only concern with our 95-96 Cats too -

I remember Shep and Delk getting looks as PG's in there somewhere

Turner & Epps eventually settled in and tore it up

Anyone else remember that?
Yup.

Pitino tried his darnedest to make Delk the PG, it just didn’t work.

Epps was the steady hand. Not the flashiest, but the steadiest and with Delk, Anderson, Walker, and McCarty on the floor, Pitino realized that steady PG play was the way to go.

Then Turner as a Freshman wasn’t quite ready, but was a nice change of pace guy from Epps.

Pitino did play with the lineup early on trying to find the right fit before settling in with Epps.

It was almost like he was trying not to play Epps,

He even started Sheppard at PG the year before, but he really wasn’t comfortable there.

It was kind of weird in a way, how he tried everything conceivable to keep Epps off the floor, but Epps wouldn’t have it.

Anthony Epps was initially a walk-on who won that job on one of the most talented college team ever and then almost led us to another.
A Kentucky Legend.

I wound up meeting his cousin somewhere in lexington -

Epps may have been good enough of a defensive back to push for SEC honors?

Dude was awesome

Yes I remember rick trying to make delk fit as a pg. It wasn’t a good fit and the cats played better after that experiment.

Decently athletic?

Might be the best athlete overall on the team bball skill wise. Fast and quick. Can dribble pass and shoot. Can get up and a dogged defender. Lots of skills.

That assessment came from lack of explosive/contortion plays around the rim so far. Decent was an understatement, but wasn’t willing to say, “very athletic,” or “incredibly athletic,” just yet. He’s plenty quick and has hops.

Anthony was never a walk-on...Pitino tried to sell him on it but Epps had a scholarship offer from UL and was prepared to accept that rather than walk-on. I believe this is the underlying reason for Rick's stubborness in trying not to hand the team to Anthony from the outset. He had to be seeing the same thing in practice that we could all see in the games: that team was a well oiled machine w/ AE at the helm.

I had a 5th Region football coach tell me when Anthony accepted the basketball scholarship that he was "making a million dollar mistake". Swears to this day that Epps could've been a 10 yr. pro at wide receiver. Compared him favorably to Steve Largent, (if any of you old school folks remember that name) when I questioned Epps speed. Said his set of hands would off-set his lack of blazing, top-end speed.
