I always ask the server if the current cooks tend to under cook it just a little or over cook it a little. Of course most of the time they say cook it spot on but I keep prodding.
Outside of the nicer restaurants you can almost always expect the temp to be wrong when dining out during a restaurant's rush. I spent plenty of time cooking in my younger days so I've seen it all and know how it goes back there. For me, it's just not worth spending the money when I know I can do it equally well or better myself.

In my opinion, the best steak is Malone's, but be prepared for a large check. I only go to Malone's on a special occasion. I haven't been to Tony's, which seems to be the other place frequently mentioned for the best steak in Lexington.

The best value to me is Logan's. I think Logan's has a very nice filet for a reasonable price.

Blue Heron and Tony's for a steak at any price.

Been to Jeff Ruby's in Louisville and never understood all the hype there.

Malone's or Merrick Inn for a great steak at a restaurant.

If you're looking to buy raw and prepare yourself, Lucky's Market. Really good prices for really good cuts. Had a flat iron from there and it was one of the better pieces of meat i've had.
