Who was Dochterman talking about?

I found this snippet from Scott Dochterman in this week’s Legends & Listeners podcast to be interesting. He was talking about McCollum as Iowa’s coach, when he said this:
“You've got a coach that doesn't complain about the portal. And doesn't complain about, you know, NIL and doesn't embellish. It doesn't sit in front of a group of people at the PCA meeting and say, it's going to cost $500,000 to retain a player.
When really, in fact, it would have been two. They had the money for it and he chose not to retain them. But he told everybody they didn't have the money for it because that's the kind of person he is.”
Who is the player Doc is referring to? Tony Perkins, maybe? I suppose he may not be referencing Fran with this comment, but that was the implication I got.

Thoughts?

I remember Fran saying he wasn't paying freshmen or portal players more than existing players on the team. I guess he didn't want his boys NIL going down.

Was Tony Perkins worth $200,000 in 2024?

His playing time (31 to 23 min) and PPG (14.0 to 8.7) went down while at Missouri.

Still can't believe we are having these discussions on what a player should be paid. ;)

Can someone smarter than me explain what it means?

Taking a stab here...

The post is saying that Fran went and demanded more money from the PCA meeting (president's meeting on athletics) saying that he needed 500,000 in order to keep Perkins.

Then, it was discovered two things were not true. 1- he had more than enough money to keep Perkins and let him walk anyway but told everyone he couldn't get a deal done due to finances.
2- he lied about how much he was demanding and "only" got 200k from Mizzou instead of $500,000.

Checks out.

If there is a silver lining, Barta’s incompetence, which stretched the Fran era out about 3-4 years longer than it should have been, allowed for Iowa to be in the right position to land Ben McCollum—a coach who could prove to be one of those once-in-a generation hires who, unlike Lute Olsen, who left for warmer weather, might actually make a long career for himself at Iowa.

Time will tell.

Fran hated NIL. I'm going to guess he threw out 500k hoping it wouldn't be met just to give himself another reason to complain.
