turning short passes into 40 yard gains...he is the easy answer
I really thought we'd see more of this last year. I hope you're right though.

there will be a lot of room for Perkins to run when he catches it out of the backfield. I hope we see more of his Gator Bowl type performances

While quick, Perkins doesn't move well laterally. He has a great burst, but his top-end speed isn't great. He is way too stiff in the hips. Perkins is a piece to the puzzle, but he isn't much of a difference maker. I will get blasted for saying this, but I would take Jeff Scott or Tracy Lampley over Perkins and not look back.

We should have taken Lampley over Perkins. He is a better receiver/returner than Perkins, and he is C-USA' Preseason Special Teams Player of the year. I'm aware it's C-USA, but still.

If he learns to hold on to the ball and run decent routes, Lewis should win this going away. He is the most electric player on the team, although Holloway may have something to say about that before it is all said and done. Morrow and Autry should be popular choices as well. They're both very different from anyone else we have at their position.

Lampley and Scott have been 1st string...this will be Perkins first year to start. Not saying youre wrong, just too early to tell. Put Perkins on a CUSA team or a ****** OM team and he may be unreal...who knows.

has their RB's making catches. UPig's 2 headed RB last year caught 44 passes between them.

Perkins didnt do much in the passing game last year because we couldnt run screens due to our OL being so banged up. The last thing you want is hurt lineman getting chopped down by defensive players in open field.

Perkins may not be our leading rusher, but he will get carries and his effect on the passing game should be huge.

He was equal parts exciting and exasperating last season. I'm thinking he drops the exasperating part. He was a step or two(and a turnover or two) from beinga really good player last season.

I think he just needed another year in the system and a little more time under Dan's tutelage. He should be exciting to watch.

You don't want any of them being relied upon to carry the load running the ball. Perkins just isn't that shifty, and he is a non-factor in the return game. I'm not saying he is a bad player, because he isn't. He just isn't the ideal "scat" back.

And like C34 said, it's not about his running ability as much as it is his pass catching ability. You put Lampley or Scott on a team with Ballard and you probably don't even know their names. Like I said, you may end up being right, but this will be Perkins' first year to show what he can do full time...not just in 3rd down passing situations, etc. So no, it's not a fair comparison. Scott and Lampley were arguably one of the top 2 players on their entire teams last year...Lampley the last several years. Perkins has not even been in our top 3 or 4 options on offense yet.

Most of this is very true but I think Perkins is built to carry more of a work load at tailback than Scott is. However, Perkins is not near theplay-makerin space that he is made out to be on this board. My vote goes to Jameon though I do somewhat question his top end speed.

that don't look like they haven'tdipped their gloves in KY Jelley. Russel has to be confident in throwing the ball...especially early in the season before our o-line has a chance to gel. Knowing his receivers are not going to drop a pass is one less thing he needs to worry about. He has to know that if he stands in the pocket and takes a shot from a blitzing LB that if he can put the ball on target it is going to be caught. That goes for all of our WR's. If he loses confidence in any of them then he will start trying to force it to the others and getting happy feet too early in the progression.

we are going to be very very tough if Joe Morrow is our most exciting player.

I am not worried about perk, griffin, or defense really. we're fine at those spots.

2nd place Jameon Lewis. If Morrow and Lewis are our two most exciting then Russell will be having a good year, and hopefully that also mean the OL is solid.

Any chance he pulls it all together this year? Typically he's shown out against the CUSA type teams and been a non-factor in SEC play. So the potential is there. I wonder how much the off season injuries hurt him last year - he had the shoulder injury in the egg bowl 2010, then a sprained ankle after the spring... so maybe he wasn't 100% by the time the season started? Hopefully he's got that senior motivation that pushes him to the next level.

On offense, Perkins and Lewis have the most potential to be big time playmakers.

For defense, I'dtake the following three: Banks, Slay, and Whitley.

Banks was all over the place last year - INTs, forced fumbles, CB blitzes. Slay has tons of potential and I think is poised to have a big year. And of course Whitley is going to hurt someone out there while grabbing a few INTs on the side.

Good choice on Banks, but I disagree. There is a difference between best player and most exciting player to watch. I have said it before on here, but I think there is a decent chance that Banks has a very quiet year because teams simply won't throw his way. I could be wrong on that, but I have seen it happen before in college football when a team has a shutdown corner. IMO, the less exciting Banks is and the less we hear his name this fall, the better our defense will be. That will mean that team's game plan will not involve throwing to his side of the field, and that means he is as good as we think he is. If they are throwing his way, then that may mean that he isn't as good has we think he is.

Ranked 4th on the team in tackles, 3rd on the team in TFL - had 8 TFL for 43 yards (most TFL yards on team). Had 3 sacks and more QB hurries,3 forced fumbles, and one punt return TD.

Even if you take away the INTs (one of which was returned for a TD) he still was one of our biggest playmakers last year.

I personally think Slay may have more INTs this year, but it's the other stuff that Banks started doing in the second half of last year that made him special. He got all of his INTs in the first 7 games, but most of the other stuff came in the last 6 (sacks, TFLs, forced fumbles).</p>
