Who will have the better year, Relf or Masoli?

Masoli is a really good QB in the spread but with Ole Miss not running the spread I think the SEC is going to give him a very rude awakening. There simply isn't time for him to learn a new systemwhile gettingchased by SEC athletes. Masoli will probably throw for more yards but I think Relf will keep the chains moving more consistently because our O-line is better. I take Relf.

I don't know what constitutes "better" but stats wise I feel like Relf will probably get more playing time and therefore have more yards passing/rushing. However, as far as efficiency goes, its hard to say. If Masolimeshes with Ole Miss' offense andbecomes the starter,I have a hard time saying this guy that was included in Heisman talks last season wouldn't be better than Relf.

At the same time, unlike a lot of folks on this board, I have some reservations about Relf still so my judgment may be clouded.

I think it will be interesting to see if it is the system or the player that makes for a Heisman candidate. Take Houston's QB last year and put him at say Auburn. Would he be in the Heisman discussion? Probably not.

I think the spread has a way of really making some players more productive than they would normally be. As bad as I hate to say it Coach34 has a point concerning Dixon and the numbers he put up in the spread.

We may have a better offense because we'll have better players around our QB and we will have been inour system longer (either Masoli or the rest of the UM offense is going to have to make a drastic change in a very short time).

Assuming Tig will be back on the team this fall, they'll need to do what they can to keep Masoli and Tig from even speaking to one another.

On the original question, it would all depend on how we used Masoli. If you ask me, Nutt would be wise to dig up some of his old Matt Jones zone read offense stuff from the 01-04 seasons. If that's still in the playbook and easy enough to add with our current players, then Masoli would be very productive in that style of offense along with the Wildcat sets if they let him run those as well.

The added bonus if that were to happen is that our defense would actually get a good look at the zone read before the Egg Bowl, and they might actually force Mullen/Relf to run another play.

Apparently though, even if Masoli comes, Nutt is going into the fall with Stanley as the No. 1 starter, which makes me think he's not necessarily planning too many tweaks to the offense. I hope I'm wrong about that, because if we do bring in Masoli, he should be running much different packages from Stanley. They should almost be running two entirely different offenses.

If Masoli were at MSU then I don't think there would be any discussion over who would be the better QB since we run the spread. It would be Masoli. I just think going to a new system against an entirely different level of athlete week in and weekout will make it too difficult for Masoli to have a huge impact in the SEC.

I just wonder how much Nutt will tinker with the offense to suit Masoli at the risk of messing up the rest of the team.

I certainly agree that the spread makes some players more productive. But, I did watch a couple of Oregon games last year and in my opinion Masoli was nothing short of electric when the offense was really clicking. Granted, when he was hurried he made some bad plays, but the guy is good.

That said, comparing Relf (who up to this time has done nothing to make me believe he is "great") and Masoli who had a huge season last year, its hard for me to say that Relf will be a better player than Masoli if he really "fits" into Ole Miss' offense. Like Pat said, either Ole Miss or Masoli will have to make a big change- it that change is made and it works, Masoli will be on another level versus Relf. Hopefully all my Relf doubts will be dispersed when he comes out of the gate throwing 40 yard slants for TDs, making it rain all over the field while running for minimum 7 yard gains, dragging LBs.

What has Masoli been doing for the last 2 months. I mean, if he's been sitting around smoking blounts and eating doritos, not throwing a football, he could be out of shape. Anyone know if he has been doing any type of working out or football activities in the last 2 months?

Otherwise, as I said 2 weeks ago, Masoli to Ole Miss makes them better and concerns me some.

... so I would have to say Relf will provide a more consistent full season performance if he can stay healthy.

But Masoli will be the human highlight reel if he can stay out of Lafayette County lockdown, which I really don't see happening.

The difference is that Relf got suspended for what he did last year. Masoli has gotten a couple of felonies since the last game last year and he won't miss a single game.

I think Masoli could potentially put up huge numbers this year, especially considering his first 5 games are basically warm-ups for the real season. If he can pick up the playbook quickly enough then he has a chance at being the 2nd best qb in the SEC. I have faith that in Relf to be more thanserviceable, but Masoli has proven he can do it on a big stage. Then again, if Nutt pulls the same stunt he did on Dexter Mc during the first half of last season, then I like Relf's chances of putting up bigger numbers than Masoli. This is not to say that I have no faith in Relf, because I think he will very good, but Masoli has more experience.

You read to deep into my post, it was a joke from a Pat Patterson thread the other day.

For the record, I think Relf has the better year. He is in a much more comfortable situation with a better OL, and better offense to fit his skill set.

to being "the man". The staff has got to keep him relaxed and not let the pressure of being a starter get to him. If he presses too hard he`ll fail.

Nutt will find ways to make Masoli a factor and he`ll produce. Let the games begin !

Last one booked at Parchman has the better year.. I'm guessing Masoli will be the first one issued his orange jumpsuit, since he's yet to face any consequence for his illegal actions, except receiving a starting SEC QB position. I may be wrong, but that's some harsh punishment...

Relf wins by default...

masoli and relf are on two different levels .....it will take a talented offense and great coaching if relf gets the starting role

Masoli was great vs good last year bc Oregon had great skill players. UM this year << Oregon last year, even with Masoli on both teams. Masoli is a step up but won't be what he was last year. I think it's a draw if Relf's passing improvement proves true.
