I get your asking what player, but Southern is gonna score first, and often on our hot garbage defense. Just one Devil's opinion.
Opening kickoff return? I'm down.
But my real answer is Sedou Trayore (sp?). I think we can't punch it in from short yardage on the first drive, but Shapen hits a wide open Treyaro (sp?) in the flat on 3rd down.

You really are trying to hard to make them a good team. Of those 21 Marshall players that followed him maybe 7 actually played there. And zero played on the OL… this narrative that the 62nd ranked transfer portal class got better but the 18th rated didn’t is ludicrous. Even for the prince of darkness. Huff isn’t some miracle worker, he walked into a solid foundation left by Holiday at Marshall... He won the sun belt and the only school to offer him a job(Marshall didn’t want to keep him) was the worst Sun belt school
Obviously it’s clear you’re being sarcastic but still I could see him scoring the first TD. We’ll have to see how well Blake is slinging the rock over their D to our receivers but I could as easily seeing it being Thompson or one of the other recievers or booth. Hell Shapen might call his own number depending on down and distance. I will say Shapen will be involved regardless lol whether it’s a run play or pass regardless. If I had to to say I guess booth or Bothwell but just as easily see Thompson or the receiving core. Also I do think our defense will be quite a bit better than last year. Surely hope so at least
Thanks for the story. I am not trying at all to make them a good team, and could have done without the lesson that I already knew. I did not say or imply anything about their recruiting or anything about where their portal class is ranked. Frankly, I do not care about them. I was talking about us, and our hot garbage defense. You could have taken most d2 offenses last year and stomped our d into the ground. So, given that we have the same guy in charge, and a bunch of less-than-stellar portal guys of our own, I am expecting the defense to be bad. Maybe not as bad as last year, although that would be historic. Also, if you think for one second Lebs is a better coach than Huff, then sorry bro you are wrong. Maybe he will be one day, but right now he is not. Usually, I try to be nice, but the truth is often hard.
Look, I hope we win the damn game. But I am not going to expect us to be much better than last year until I see it. I am not going to base it on good feelings, or misleading portal rankings. I am going to give this team a chance to prove me wrong, because I think we are headed for 4 wins given our talent level and coaching ability level. For the record, I hope I am wrong but I am not getting my hopes up until I am proven wrong by this team.

Hopefully with analyst now considered coaches by the NCAA and can coach, with Macintyre and Rhoads as analyst they will help make adjustments between series and not at half. I just hope our DC listen to their advice.
I get it but heres the thing. We arent the same team as last year. It’s really easy to say we are going to suck cause it’s a lot easier to be negative than positive. Truth is we got significantly better on defense. Spent a lot of money to do so. Don’t underestimate the value add of MAC and Rhodes on defense along with Dancy.
You have no idea if we are better on defense. You can't yet. So please stop with that. It is really easy to say we are going to suck because we went 2-10 last year with new coaches and portal guys that none of us know if they will be any good or not added.
I am not saying we are going to suck to be negative or prove a point. I genuinely have a feeling that we are going to be awful. Maybe not quite as bad as last year, but bad. I could be wrong. Just like you could be.

We certainly do not "know" how much better this team will be. Its hard for me to see us not being quite a bit improved. Sadly we could be a lot better and still be a 3 or 4 win team. Some of our defensive additions may or may not pan out in the SEC. I have had to actually convince myself that we should be much better. I hope I am not crushed after one or two games. Should have a good idea by halftime
I think we'll be somewhat better, but still way below average for an SEC team. Plenty good enough to beat Southern Miss though.

Why? He’ll never be here for 5 years anyway. And by then everyone will probably just have 5 years eligibility anyway, if not 6 or 7. You play to win today. Always. But now more than ever.

I expect us to be better defensively, only because it would be borderline impossible not to be. How much better, nobody knows. I suspect it will be an improvement from "atrocious" to "bad." We spent a lot of money on the roster last year, too. Those guys couldn't even line up pre-snap. Maybe Mac and Rhodes will have us lined up better but they won't be offering much more than that. It's quite a leap to have to convince yourself that adding two coaching retreads as analysts and a bunch of under the radar guys out of the portal is suddenly going to make this defense good. And we've still got a special teams coach running the defense, regardless of the retreads we've added.
We'll beat Southern. I can't get my head around the concept that there are people here who think we could lose that game. But we're looking 3-9/4-8 square in the eye. And this time next year, we'll all be saying the same things on both sides of the argument aGAIN.
