Who would you call a home run hire?

Coughlin hasnt coached in college since 1980 and Billick hasnt coached in college since 1990.

Both have good gigs making a ton of money.

At 70, I you sure Tom wants to get in the rat race of recruiting...?

Well it had been a decade since Brooks coached in College and he was out of coaching for 3 years - so it isn't out of the realm of possibility and he was 62 when he came to UK...

Remember Billick did win a Super Bowl with TRENT FREAKIN' DILFER (I know he had one of the greatest D ever assembled - but my facts are only options used at my discretion for sake of winning arguments - Direct quote from my wife) and I did say the reason was I WAS A BIG RAVENS FAN

So in realm of possibility I do say they could be lured - Heck I forgot Steve Mariucci too!!!

I hear ya, my only caveat would be that Brooks was a college head coach for about 20 years, so that is the main difference.

Trent is a buddy of mine btw...

I come in peace:

If you want to win, your AD will need to swallow his holy attitude and go after Briles. Someone WILL pick Briles up, it's just a matter of waiting for things to cool off. Petrino cheated on his wife and lied to his boss. His penalty was 1 year before WKU picked him up. Briles situation is worse. Covering up sexual assault(s) will carry a heavier PR price tag, but he's already out this year. So there's one year of the penalty paid.

Add in the community service stuff that someone mentioned earlier in the thread, work with womens groups, etc. and it could be done.

You'd also have a very good and GRATEFUL coach that someone was willing to give him another chance. That brings out loyalty for the second chance.

Anyone heard a single bad thing about Petrino since he came back to UofL? Public humiliation can change a man. Seems to have with Petrino. Probably would too with Briles.

Conditionally speaking Briles IF AND ONLY IF they do a lot of due diligence and can be reasonably assured that his part in the Baylor scandal was minor if at all, and that the guy can be trusted to run the program. Others like Herman @ Houston or Josh Daniels OC for NE, could be considered home runs but they aren't really worth mentioning becasue they aren't likely available.

Why does McDaniels keep coming up? Has he ever coached in college? Gotta be able to recruit.

Herman ain't gonna happen. He's already turned down S. Carolina. If you turn down S Carolina, why would you choose UK? He's the hottest young name out there. If and when he leaves Houston (the if is based on Houston getting into B-12) he'll have his pick of schools in better standing football wise than UK.

Yeah - I don't see him leaving anytime soon - I mean he IS in great recruiting country and he IS running a program soon to be in the B12.....only a few of the TOP TOP TIERS (USC / Alabama /Notre Dame / etc) could lure me away from the situation he is in.....and i would say it is probably the same for Mr Tom Hermann

This, people. We cannot let Barnhart preemptively strike potential candidates without at least doing his (our?) due diligence. For UK to get a good/great coach, they are going to have to take someone that is tarnished.

And another thing - why is a GD Louisville fan 10X smarter than our AD and half our fanbase?

A lot of these posts are *ahem* sort of unrealistic. I guess it is a "home run hire" thread so its cool to use a little imagination.

My real choices are PJ Fleck, Brohm, or one of Paul Johnson's guys or someone else who can give us some option football.

Less realistic....maybe they will run Charlie out of Texas soon. I think he is a great coach. Everyone seems to be down on coordinators...but what about Bob Shoop?

Although, who knows what the landscape will look like at the end of this year (I hope not) or next as far as available guys....?

Can someone point me to evidence for what everyone assumes is true about Barnhart - that he's got certain "moral standards" that prevent him from hiring the best guy for the job?

I have assumed that, too, just not sure what the basis is. I realized this the other day when someone spoke of Barnhart preaching all over the place. I don't think I've seen Barnhart "preach" anywhere, let alone all over the place.

Is the evidence that he wouldn't interview Petrino? Because no one would interview Petrino - heard Finebaum go over that in detail the other day. Wasn't just UK/Barnhart.

Where is the idea that Barnhart is some holy roller that won't even talk to a sinner - where does that notion come from?

edit: just remembered, he did hire Dennis Erickson once, after all.....

1. no more coordinators
2. want someone with an offensive mind
3. don't want someone who has won at a power (Ohio State/Tressel, example).
4. should be an up and comer (e.g., guy at Western Michigan).

just my opinion.....

0-2 to start the season, lost to Eastern Washington at home. Just looking at their schedule they could easily go 2-10 this season. I see them going 3-9 after they way they started the season. They will beat Idaho (but if they don't look out), after that the only game I see them winning is Colorado and maybe Oregon State. Coaches get extensions all the time and get fired after a really bad season. Just look at all the extensions we have handed out.

I wouldn't right Leach and WSU off just yet. They started last year with a 7 point loss to Portland State and ended up going 9 - 4 with all but one of those wins coming against a Power 5 team, including wins over Oregon, Oregon State, Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, and Miami...not to mention they only lost to #8 Stanford by 2 points. They've lost their 1st 2 games, including a game at Boise State (where I shutter to think what the outcome would have been for UK), by a combined 6 points...they can still turn it around again this year.

And it's not like he inherited a program in Washington State that was in significantly better shape than UK's historically (WSU won a combined 9 games in the 4 years prior to Leach's arrival and their all-time record is 29 games under .500, whereas UK actually won 20 games in the 4 seasons before Stoops and is 4 games over .500 all time).

I'd be thrilled with the results Leach achieved last year and certainly with those that he produced at Texas Tech. Not saying he's the best choice for our next coach at this time, but he's certainly worthy of consideration.

People, Tom Herman would not come here. When UH goes to the Big 12 he will be one of the highest paid coaches in the country, per his contract. You don't leave any college job in Texas for UK. Not to mention Houston is the 4th largest metro area in the country. He just gets kids to stay home and boom.

Briles is the answer and if not, Brohm or Western Mich. coach. And that's if any of them would come. This job sucks and everyone knows this. They are gonna have to really pay if they even want Briles or Brohm.

The curse of the Bear is real!!

If Kentucky is going to compete in the SEC they are going to have to pay a lot of money for a good coach . I wouldn't mind Lane Kiffin. Young, head coaching experience, and he is learning from the best in the business right now working for Saban. I know people say he didn't do well at USC but they were on probation during his time there. Do any of you all think he hasn't learned a lot from Nick Saban? He's been recruiting kids for the best program in college football and maybe he could get some of those recruits to follow him? Tom Herman would be my number one choice but he would never come to Kentucky.
