The opposite of self loathing RU fans. What is it about a school known for being behind a number of other publics academcially, in football one disputed half national title in 50 years, located somewhere geographically irrelevant, and known for incubating extreme left wing ideology that makes its graduates feel entitled and superior? Can someone please explain this to me. They are paying a coach 7 million dollars.. they should be embarrassed as alumnus every time the phone rings asking for donations.

They are definitely arrogant, but many I have bumped into at hoops and one of my favorite eating establishments last year during the OSU-Michigan game are just a-holes to be around in general. Basketball was funny last year. They were pretty quiet when we were up 8 and it looked like they would lose. They eeked out a win against our bottom feeder team and then they wouldn't shut up. Some doughboy Michigan fan was actually running around outside the rac slapping RU fans on the back telling them to sing the fight song with him. Jackass.
I'm guessing you aren't serious, but I'll give a serious answer anyway.
Michigan is the winningest program of all time, has the largest stadium in all of American football, and the school has over 100 programs ranked in the top 10 academically. They also regularly finish high in the Director's Cup race. How are we doing on those measures?
Ann Arbor is a much nicer (and bigger) city than New Brunswick and has more to offer than just about any city in NJ. It's not "irrelevant" because it isn't in the NE or on a coast, or whatever your logic on this one is.
And they're paying that much money because they CAN. Michigan has money that Rutgers can't even remotely fathom. Michigan has one of the largest endowments and several billionaire donors.
There are plenty of arrogant Michigan fans - but this is true of pretty much every school with a winning tradition. The reality is that college football breeds douchebaggery, all over the place.
You're much smarter than to dismiss a school because of the state that it's in.
The reality is that Michigan does just about everything well.
I chose Michigan over USC (which accepted me within 2 weeks of applying...) - and it was a pretty easy decision.
You must be kidding. . . . In most rankings of public national universities Michigan is Top 5 in Undergraduate programs (5) as well as their graduate programs in Law (3), Business (5) and Medicine (2).

You can check other ranking services and will find similar results.
Their Endowment was #1 among public universities at almost $10 billion in 2014. The next public was UVa at around $6 billion. (Actually, the Texas and the University of California endowments are larger but are presented only for the entire UT and UC systems and include many colleges.)
They have also won so many B1G Championships in an Athletic Department that actually makes money.

Because they're in denial about how sh tty their football team has been for 10 years and about how ohio state has been better for 20.
Michigan fans are more critical of the team than outsiders are. Trust me. They absolutely know OSU has been dominant. However, they also know Michigan has the resources and ability to return to the top.
But, here's an actual example of arrogance: continuing to call MSU "little brother" when they have whooped Michigan's butt for years. That should probably stop and they should be given their due.
Better questions is, why are Michigan fans that are NOT alums of Michigan arrogant? I know of few of these types.

If the state of Michigan sucks, U of M is all the more impressive for being a center of excellence in so many things in spite of that supposedly dreadful, irrelevant location.

I see UM is ranked 11 and SC 20 in law schools. If sitting in Michigan made that worth it to you instead of being one of the worlds greatest cities with unlimited connections, good for you.

You mean sort of like the arrogance that so many on this board show toward Syracuse and UConn despite the fact that (i) SU beat us, pretty soundly at least once, 2 of 3 times in recent years when their team had no talent at all and (ii) in our prior weak conference we never won a title outright and lowly, talent-poor UConn (which thrashed us soundly at least twice when they were awful and we had a conference title on the line one of the times) won such a title. That arrogance? The only difference is that UM's arrogance (as disgusting as it is) has some basis in sports and other areas. Some houses of glass here.
11th is disappointing. It was 7th when I attended. Oh well. Obsessing over US News is unhealthy, so I won't.
Location does matter, but while you're actually a student, you're mostly networking with your fellow students. And you can work anywhere (and network) during the summers, if you want to.
Coincidentally, I'll be in LA this weekend - and at the SC game, no less.
But....zero regrets.
I think that's a problem with many winning college football programs, the fans who never attended the school are the worse - especially in the South and Midwest states without a pro team. Just had this convo literally an hour ago with my V.P. When he worked for Walmart HQ in Bentonville, took in a couple of games Arkansas games while he worked there. Said the redneck fans in the crowd were horrible, the ones you doubt ever took a step on any college campus.
I work with a bunch of Michigan grads, undergrad and MBAs. Have a handful of friends as well who went got their undergrad there. I find them to be okay. And I agree with lawmatt, they seem to be very realistically critical of their own program. But those are just the ones I know.
Huh? I would say its the fact that its probably the second best public school (after Cal - ahead of UVa, UNC, and UCLA), and they have the most FB wins of all time I think (or did.) I mean seriously - if you managed to get into Michigan to begin with it more or less means you were probably something of a self-entitled brat from the start.
UConn never won an outright title either. They tied with WVU both years they won the title.
I stand corrected, if you are correct, but as I recall they played in a BCS bowl and we didn't.
As far as I'm concerned you only really won the title if you went to the BCS bowl.
