Why are so many coaches bad at clock management?

So many games are won or lost in closing minutes. Teams are investing millions and some tens of millions into their staff.

so why doesn’t seem like so many coaches don’t manage end of game situations well?

This is Lebby’s fourth struggle with it this year alone. Huepel was bad in the game against us and seems like half the games I watch I question what coaches are thinking in closing minutes of first half or the game.

I'm assuming most coaches watch very little TV and never hear the broadcasters talk strategy. We see it so clearly, but with all Levee has going on, he can't remove himself from the moment.

They think they can win with play calling only. If only they had started running the clock down in between plays once they got the 17-point lead they probably would have won. Hell, they kept on snapping the ball with 15 to 20 seconds left on the play clock. Also, Lebby's OT play calling is horrible. Both OT games. I can't understand why throw the ball to the end zone on the first play. Then the second play. Now you are third and long. Play for the first down and get the ball down to the five or closer. If I remember correctly last night in over time we had three dropped passes, two false starts and a sack. That's horrible.

The two examples you gave are the same. Heupel and Lebby’s offense are the same. So their approach and mindset with regards to their offense in certain situations will be similar for sure.

I think it’s because it’s tough and you never can tell how things are going to turn out with 18-24 (now) year olds.

Broadcasters can’t be the only people in the business of football talking about strategy. Surely those conversations happen when they watch other games in post season or when they are having a coaches conference about their own games. If they are only talking Xs and Os then that is a problem but we will never be privy to those conversations to know.

He does not have the ability to manage the game and call Offensive plays. Disagree all you want. Some coaches can but he cannot.
It’s honestly a lot going on for a guy trying to be HC and OC. You’re watching the current play and play clock, planning for the next play depending on what happens, actually calling the play in, trying to watch what the defense is doing, keeping up with which WR / RB just limped off the field. And our punter keeps kicking line drives all night so I need to go tell him to quit that ****.

A lot going on. Most people aren’t capable of multitasking like that. I damn sure can’t.

The clock in 4th quarter with or without lead must be forefront in the HC mind at all times. You call plays based off where the clock is especially last 10min or so. To completely ignore it is absurd

Lebby needs Fluff or a Fluff type back. Booth isn’t the guy you hand it to to get 2-3 yards when you absolutely need them and everyone in the stadium knows what you’re doing. Kamario will be able to once he is a threat to do other things, but even he isn’t going to drive low against D lineman and push the pile. Losing fluff was a problem, and the bigger problem is that lebby can’t find a back on the roster who has the legs and density to push through the wall of humanity and eat clock.

lots of blame to go around, but even with the new coach time management bad play calling, we have fluff, we win the last two games. And we maybe don’t get run off the field in the 4th against TAMU.

Clock management seems like exactly the type of topic that should arise during film review afterwards.

At some point he might but as a new HC I fully agree he doesn’t. He needs to find an OC. Lebby needs to concentrate on game management and time management.
