Why aren't MSU fans this passionate about the school itself?

We all went to school there. Went to classes, got an education, walked around campus, etc... We are proud of our school for many reasons (i hope) other than how the athletes perform on the game field, right? If they dont perform well and win a lot of games, it isn't a reflection on you. YOU didn't have anything to do with it. Why do you let it ruin your day? Why do you worry about something in which you have absolutely no control? I am a MSU fan. Not just a MSU team sports fan.

We need to be a FAN of the school and focus our energy and something in which we actually CAN make a difference. We can donate more money to campus improvement. We can do a much better job of promoting our school to high school kids. We can get involved with school promotion to businesses that hire recent graduates.

Take your negative energy and put it to work in a positive way.

The majority of the schools in the US don't have a lot of success in sports, but there are still a lot of people that are passionate about their school.
Don't get me wrong, I want our school to win at sports, but I don't take it so personally that I think that I failed. Look at all posts on here saying how "We Suck" "We don't deserve it". The athletes may suck. The Athletes may be lazy or unmotivated or maybe the coach for that sport isn't getting them to play to their potential. Either way I have nothing to do with it, nor can I do anything about it.

State's an athletic program with a school.

Look at how some view Foglesong. The man didn't know what he was doing but he fired Templeton. That makes him a great Presidentto many people.</p>

To be clear though - you aren't suggesting that this is a issue unique to MSU are you? The same question could be asked for the majority of state Universities in this country.

No, not suggesting that at all. But for some reason I feel like MSU fans are worse about it. I don't know exactly why I think that except for the undercurrent of acceptance to the labels that other school put on us. I do NOT buy into the whole stanksville, cow college, ugly girl ******** that OM people and others put on us. I think a lot of MSU fans in the back of their mind have bought on that a little bit and being good in sports is the only way to feel really good about your school.

Success in athletics does breed success in academics. ESPN's documentary on "The U" (Miami) showed what their football program did for the school. Even flashes in the pan like Boston College saw better enrollment, academic funding, etc after Doug Flutie's miracle.

President Droopy pretty much united the "fan" base in agreement that the University could be doing better, and many of the large donors do give to academics in an almost equal amount.

The fact remains though, college sports is entertainment while a strong biology department is not. It's on TV, the media covers it, and it's better "water cooler/internet" talk than the recent crop of accounting grads. Also, you only have former biology students taking a passing interest in the quality of the program, while all graduates can take interest in the football team. Even then, if it came to be known that the MSU engineering program was losing some of its credibility, I guarantee you that you would see movement in the alumni base. Even proactive measures, like Doc's enrollment goals, had tremendous support.

Just because there's not a message board for Coach34 to ***** about it, doesn't mean people don't care.

and the competitive nature of Sports. If Mississippi State and Ole Miss were throwing pennies in a can I would watch, and if State lost I would be upset. Simple as that.

In that case, if WE ever when a national championship in any sport you better not come back and say "WE won." You better say that they won in that case. WE are MSU in every facet. WE win as a school and WE lose as a school. WE support the school so when WE lose, WE get upset.

While I can reminisce about my years spent in Simrall acquiring the dark secrets of engineering with a few others here, it would be meaningless to do with someone who was in a completely different college. On the other hand, I can talk about tearing down the goalposts after the 2000 Florida game or watching Mario Austin sink a 3 to send a game with Kentucky into overtime and English majors might know what I'm talking about.

Unfortunately, I completely agree with skb124.nafoom. I am part of that school just like I am part of this country. If the US wins more golds than anyone else, I have no problem saying WE won more golds than anyone else... same if WE lose. I am part of MSU, and I want us to be the best WE can.
