Why do our current students not know the timing of the "Hey Song"?

I've mildly paid attention to the threads about this over the past couple weeks and thought I needed to hear it a little better. So I went to Cowbell Yell this past Friday. Wow. All I can say is wow. It's like they are doing 3 separate cheers. It's awful. 1/3 of them are taking their time and doing it proper. 1/3 are singing at 2x speed. And 1/3 of them are singing it somewhere in between. I swear a 1/3 of the student body is already screaming "Woooooo...Damn Right" before the other 2/3 are singing "Mississippi State...". The last 5 seconds of the song is a total garbled mess.

I propose we have a graphic with the lyrics and bouncing ball.

Starting next year, all students should have to prove that they can do this correctly before being allowed to purchase season tickets. **

It sounds like the band plays it a little too fast. We never had trouble with this back when I was a student. Of course, we didn't get to do it very often either.

Week in and week out, it

blows my mind that the students do this. It's almost as if they do it on purpose.

I have been waiting for this thread to pop up for a very long time. I was in the band at state during the Croom/beginning of Mullen era and I can't tell you how much it aggrevated me to hear the rushing of the Hey song. Even though I don't think it makes a difference, but the echo of the band playing can play a huge factor in keeping sync with the chant. I always thought the students were just too drunk to keep up with us playing.

We should get some male students to stand in front of the student section and signal when to start different parts of chants. We could call them "Bell Leaders"***********************************************

I was a student in early 2000's and although we didn't get to do this chant often at football. We did however do it a lot during basketball and there was never a problem back then. However it sounds awful in the stadium now.

They said we were gonna "practice" this chant at Cowbell Yell

The band played the song 2 times and it was horrible both times. Someone of authority with a microphone should have stopped the whole thing after the first attempt and tried to make some changes. No one said anything. We just went on to the next highlight video or something. And I kinda like the idea of having "Bell Leaders" but isn't that what the male cheerleaders with the big megaphones are for? They should have let them do it by themselves Friday night so the students could hear how it's supposed to be. I don't know what the answer is to this but something has to be done. It's getting embarrassing. Maybe play it over the PA system instead of the band because we could not hear the band at all during the game. I was in the upper deck on the east side in the south endzone and we couldn't hear anything from the band. Maybe because the crowd and the cowbells were so loud. Not sure what it was.

They did it perfectly in this video before the Michigan game

The last 5 seconds of the song is a total garbled mess.

Don't know why they do it so fast during our game. Maybe a DJ and a rave atmosphere make all the difference.

It's sound travel. I've sat in the students and away from them. IN the student section it sounds completely normal. When I'm away from the student section they do seem to do it a different pace. All I can figure is it must be sound travel.

Someone posted a video from within the student section and it sounds all 17'd up. I've been doing that chant for almost 2 decades but I just sit it out now. Its frustrating and everyone around me is always like "wtf is wrong with the students?". It is not sound travel I can assure you. Unless the student section is breaking the sound barrier...which I'm sure they are not....although they do the chant fast.

Sadly enough I think they are copying the timing of the Hotty Toddy Cheer

Like a bunch of dumb asses....

Yes, sound takes time to travel. Meaning that the students' "whoo" should get to my ears sometime after the "whoo" from the people in my section. This is not the case.

You could not be any more wrong. I sat in the middle of them at Cowbell Yell and it was as if they were singing in round.

This is just not the case at all.

I don't know where you're getting this, but they just plain 17 it all up bc of being out of rhythm.

The first time in a real long time that I have actually liked that cheer. It really is awesome when done right.

I'm almost certain they do it on purpose.

I think it started as an accident for whatever reason, and it was off but not way off like it is now. Then they heard/saw so many bitching about it that it became a joke, and now they say it as fast as they can.

I was certain this was happening until I saw this thread where I'm apparently the only person who thinks that, so now I'm not so sure.
