Oh look, more tired talk about Ben raping and what it means to be a "true" NFL fan. Joy.

I grew up in extreme eastern KY. I watched Steeler games as a kid since those were the games we got. I personally related to the blue collar image/mentality of the team and city since that's what I considered eastern KY to be--at least before the drugs took over and the area completely died. And I certainly related to them a lot more than the arrogant, holier-than-thou state of f'n Ohio. Sure, it was a dumb, childish way of looking at it, but then again, I was a damn child. I'm not going to start plotting GPS coordinates to see what team somebody from Louisville thinks I should root for.

I don't give a damn whether anyone qualifies me as a true Steelers fan. I watch all of their games, have paid to see them live in person multiple times, including traveling to Pittsburgh, and get just as emotionally wrecked during their games as I do for UK. It's not a choice. Any bitter Bengals fan from central KY wanting to speak on behalf of the whole state, mainly exposing your own issues and insecurities, get bent.

Well, Ben was suspended by the NFL for his conduct so the idea that his escapades with using cops hired as bodyguards to navigate him through the rape process is not exactly a stellar record. Twice. If you're okay with Ben then so long as you are okay with Pitino then at least you are consistent.

To me both are sick individuals and beneath defending.

For those complaining about the Bengals performance it comes down to Burfict and Jones acting like idiots and having McCarron as a starter, Bengals probably win it if Dalton is healthy.

Are you serious? If Dalton had started that game he would have $h1t down his leg by the middle of the third quarter.

There are so many Bengals fans wanting to compare the Shazier tackle to the Burfict hit. First, f you can't see the difference in intent by now then you never will. Second, regardless of whether or not you think the Shazier tackle should have been a penalty or not, it didn't cost the Bengals the game. Actually it was a benefit to the Bengals. So, what I don't understand is how anyone could possibly defend his actions. This is not a matter of whether or not flags should have been thrown at different points in the game. It is a matter of knowing that your team is seconds away from a win. A Steeler player clearly didn't catch the ball which means that all you have to do is go back to the huddle and you are that much closer to moving on the playoffs. Instead you do the one thing that is always going to draw the refs' attention which is hit a receiver who is in mid-air after the ball is over his head. And not only do you hit him, you hit him in the head knowing the emphasis the league has on concussions right now.

It is moronic and selfish. And it cost his team and the fans of that team dearly. And yet those same fans are still trying to defend the actions of this person. Personally, if I was a Bengals fan I would want this guy as far from my team as possible. It is not the first time he has done something stupid that has cost his team, and it certainly won't be the last. And it probably won'r be the last time his actions lead to problems for his teammates. Adam Jones does not get a flag if Burfict doesn't make this hit either.

The one thing you also hope for is that some Bengal doesn't get hurt as someone tries to retaliate for Burfict's illegal activities. There is a ton of film out there of him trying to injure players. It will come back to haunt him at some point and hopefully it doesn't spread to one of his teammates.

But on the other hand, maybe I should hope Bengals fans keep defending this guy because there is a good chance that his actions might lead to another win for a team I cheer for.

As a Steeler fan, I have little doubt that Dalton would have won the game. Our pass defense is baddddd. It wouldn't have taken a Brady/Montana/Elway type of game from him.

You must be the biggest IDIOT on this board!

You clearly have no clue what a "bandwagon fan" is. So let me explain it to your tiny brain. A bandwagon fan is someone who jumps from team to team, based solely on who is good or popular at that time. When a team hits the dumps, a bandwagon fan jumps to whoever is "hot" at that time. The NBA is a prime example, where all of those Bulls fans from the 90's who are now Cavs fans. That is clearly not me, nor most Steeler fans (I have to admit, some probably are bandwagon fans). I lasted through our sucky teams of the mid-late 80's & early 90's (Mark Malone & Bubby Brister).

Are you saying that a 7 year old has the capacity to become a "bandwagon fan"? How can an adult (you) be so stupid?
If that is the case, are you also saying that anyone who became a Reds fan during the 70's is a bandwagon fan? You must be saying that, or else you are being a hypocrite.
I will give you a pass on any Reds fan who was say within an hour or so of Cincinnati at the time, as that is their "local team". I'm sure that still has you counting many Reds fans (maybe even yourself) as "bandwagon fans".

No, Jon- reading your posts for 12 years, I assure you that you are the biggest idiot on the board.

You're a bandwagon fan. I don't give a ish WHEN you jumped, you jumped. I knew enough when I was little not to just jump on the bandwagon of the best team. You didn't.

So, you can rant and rave. I don't care. I have no respect for the opinions of a bandwagon fan.

As one of the lucky fans who have gotten to witness Dalton's previous playoff gems, IMO the 0-for-4 playoffs ghosts would have jumped on his back early in the second half, and the 4th qtr would have just been a formality,.

Yeah I do need more than accusations. Especially when the first accuser, according to sworn testimony, was bragging about consensual sex with BR and the second accuser reportedly told the doctor examining her that "a boy kinda raped me"(exactly what most people would say after having been molested by some 6-7 famous NFL star) and was described as being "drunk off her ***" at the scene by the cops. So keep on trying, I suppose its easier than just having to admit that Burfict is scum and no slanderous, baseless excuse you can trot out is going to change that.
I ain't defending Burfict. You are defending your boy though. You are the one who can't admit what kind of guy your QB is. Suspended for it even. Hmmmm...baseless indeed.

Again, bringing up sexual assault...

How on earth can you morons lack self awareness at this epic level?

What don't you understand that you keep calling out everyone else regarding the sexual salt issue, one player was proven to force himself on a 14-year-old and the other one had false accusations.

Might have been the case. Although, as we now know, it only rained when the Bengals had the ball. So it would have been tough to throw even with Dalton.

That's what I thought, you're an ***, and not man enough to admit it.

I don't know what the hell you're talking about. Why would I admit that? Every Reds fan I know is a lifelong fan from this area.

He was not suspended for rape, he was suspended for going out and acting like a young, dumb kid when he was around 30 years old, putting himself in a position where these kind of accusations can be levied which is not only bad for him but gives the league a black eye. AND HE FULLY DESERVED HIS SUSPENSION. And then he turned his life around, stopped going out to bars and has a nice family. You want to accuse him of being stupid and reckless 5 years ago, that's fine but he didn't rape anybody.

From your own source:

"No witnesses, no objective evidence, no trip to the hospital, no rape kit involved, it's going to be difficult to get anyone to believe this because it does come down to her word against his word."

From ESPN:

"
A former coworker of Andrea McNulty, who has filed a civil suit against Ben Roethlisberger for alleged sexual assault, said the woman bragged about having been with the Steelers quarterback.
In an affidavit filed Friday, former Harrah's employee Angela Antonetti said that Andrea McNulty never seemed "upset, stressed out or nervous" about what happened.
Later, Antonetti said McNulty told her she thought she might be pregnant by Roethlisberger and talked about going to Pittsburgh to try to "run into" him."

wcc31 is a HYPOCRITE!

Please do explain how a Reds fan is not a bandwagon jumper (if became a fan in the 70's), but a Steelers fan since the 70's is a bandwagon jumper.
I'm a lifelong Steelers fan, how is that any different than a lifelong Reds fan?
I'd love to hear this logic!

Oh, because Cincinnati is across the river from KY. So what, like that means anything to a 7 yr old living 4 hour drive from Cincy (or 5 hours from Atlanta or StL). None of those places were even remotely close to being "local". But you are too STUPID to understand that! Our TV came from Nashville, so the only time I even could watch the Bengals play on tv they were playing the Steelers or Cowboys or Dolphins, so were on maybe 2 or at most 3 times a season. I doubt many 7 yr olds can name more than a half-dozen teams now, and I'm sure it was less back then. Why would I pick a team, that I couldn't watch or listen to on the radio.

I'm sure wcc31 also thinks every UK fan who lives in Louisville is a bandwagon jumper.

wcc31 is a HYPOCRITE!

I am a Brewers fan. Obviously not bandwagon, not sure that is even possible when it comes to the Brewers.
I was a fan of Robin Yount and Jim Rice in the late 70's. A SS that could hit, and was a MLB starter at 18; and Rice was putting up crazy numbers every year. So my fandom of those two players grew to me liking their teams too.

Steelers fan, yes. I think that has been pretty clear in this thread.
Red Sox fan, yes. Fan for 25 years before their first WS, but I'm sure wcc31 thinks I had a time machine and thus jumped on that bandwagon.
Patriots, no. Hate them.
Brewers, yes. It's not even possible to be a bandwagon fan of the Brewers.
Hurricanes, hockey. My only "local" pro team.
That's it.

I guess the anomoly is having 2 baseball teams. Except for the Hurricanes, had the other 3 teams for 35-40 years.

If JW picked a team when he was old enough to start understanding sports (understanding a little bit at least/ age 7) and then kept that team the rest of his life then it is in no way bandwagoning...

This mean anyone from Louisville is a bandwagon fan if they enjoy a pro sports team? Would they have to pick Cincy pro teams to not be bandwagon fans?

Stupid

Serious post and I would appreciate a serious reply. Somebody, anybody, please explain to me why helmet-to-helmet was not called on that play. Is the allegation that since the Bengal back lowered his head when he turned that it is no longer a penalty?

I'm guessing that maybe the ref thought it was shoulder to helmet (clearly it wasn't). Don't think that is reviewable. If he thought it was shoulder to helmet, since he had the ball and had made a move, he was no longer defenseless, like Brown was at the end of the game.

Helmet-to-helmet doesn't have to be defenseless I don't think. I am pretty sure the only way you get away with it is if they determine you lowered your head into it.

^I already said I am not arguing "defenseless" as I understand that. What I am saying is you still cannot hit helmet-to-helmet so it should have been flagged.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/22/sports/football/22hits.html?_r=0

Interesting that in the story it is yet another Stiller involved. And yet we are supposed to treat them like victims.

As I said, anyone that wonders why Bengals' fans were cheering Big Ben's injury has definitely not been watching Bengals/Steelers games since the 70s like I have. I understand it completely.

So nobody can defend or explain the lack of a helmet to helmet call which is reviewable and was completely muffed by the announcers insisting upon talking about a defenseless receiver when in fact it does not matter if it is a receiver, lineman, punter, or anyone else as you cannot hit anyone helmet to helmet anymore.

I can answer this one. First off there are different rules for a defenseless player vs. a non-defenseless player. Not many are arguing that Bernard was defenseless, so let's go to that part of the rule. The NFL rule book prohibits "forcibly hitting [the] head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm or shoulder even if the initial contact is lower than the player's neck." however it adds the addendum that it "does not prohibit incidental contact by the mask or helmet in the course of a conventional tackle."

So it basically makes it a judgement call for the refs. In the case of Shazier, he is obviously trying to lower his body to make a conventional tackle, and the contact comes from the top half of his helmet into basically the facemask of Bernard. So the ref who is making the call considers this incidental contact. I am not arguing whether or not the ref made the correct call, it is just where the logic comes from. And at full speed it is a difficult call to make. It certainly wasn't blatant, and was borderline. Ironically, Bernard probably would have been better off with a direct helmet to helmet hit because Shazier's hit essentially misses Bernards helmet and mainly catches him on the chin, which most likely was the reason for the concussion.

To me, I didn't see it as a helmet to helmet. Others might and that is OK. According to the rule it could go either way. To me the call I might have made was for spearing, which is when you hit another player with the top of your helmet. That is almost never called anymore (mainly because we teach players better technique for tackling), but again that is a judgement call and the ref may not have seen it that way. Also spearing was outlawed more for the benefit of the person who is tackling as opposed to the person being tackled when it comes to injury and it may not be an area of emphasis.

In the course of the game, calls are going to get missed. Burfict should have been called for unnecessary roughness for kicking Rothlisberger after the sack. Kicking or kneeing a player is expressly prohibited in the rule book and it isn't a judgement call, but it wasn't flagged. He should have also been flagged for excessive celebration after the interception. Both teams could have been flagged for having too many people on the field. The reality is that there were several missed calls that could have effected the game in either direction.

Having said that, the Bengals were winning the game and the penalties by Burfict and Jones were both correct and unnecessary. There is no arguing that. Play football and don't do stupid things and you go home a winner. The Bengals have no one to blame but themselves.

That's a decent post and I appreciate the time you took to write it. I only take exception to the part about the call on Jones being correct. That was horrible and decided the game. If you throw a flag there then you throw two or you throw none. You don't decide the game by turning an already controversial ending into an insanely controversial ending. Pittsburgh had STAFF on the field provoking Bengal players. Of all the nonsense I saw on both sides, that above all else needs addressing by the league decisively. To have NON-PLAYERS on the field actually doing crap to decide a playoff game is just too much to look over. The league must act on that crap, particularly since it has also been shown that the Stillers staff were hair pulling, too.
