Why do we start our conference schedule so early in the year?

In basketball and baseball, the SEC begins conference play weeks after the regular season starts. It gives teams time to get the kinks out, to find out who's best at what position, to play some high-profile opponents, and to believe there's no hope by the end of the first month of play.<div>
</div><div>Yet, by the middle of September, we're already out of the Conference Title chase. I think we should play at least three non-conference games before getting into SEC play.</div>
