Everyone deserves some of the blame. Polk coached in an era where we had an elite place to play and we were a top baseball program. He didn't have to recruit because his only real competition was LSU. Polk let players come to him.
While the rest of the SEC quietly started putting an emphasis on building up their programs, hit the recruiting trail hard, and upgraded facilities we let the game pass us by. Other programs jumped us in rapid fashion and Polk Part Duex just sat and watched it happen. His recruiting strategy and recruits coming to him and getting them from his summer camps no longer worked and we ended up with a team of mediocre pussies. We sucked while other teams, including our rival, went full force on the recruiting trail and ran laps around us.
We bring in Cohen and most agree he was the right hire. He is a hard nosed, no nonsense coach that coaches the game like he played the game. The 1st couple of recruiting classes that he brings in suck, not because he sucks but because of where are program is.
This is one of the main problems we have now. Many don't realize where this program was when Cohen took it over and too many of us live in the glory days of State baseball. We are years from that but many on here don't understand the game of baseball or the level of suck our program was at when Cohen took over. Many grew up not knowing **** about the game but just knowing that State is supposed to win in baseball.
Cohen has brought in some decent guys and had us in a damn Super Regional last year, something that I think most would agree happened much faster than it probably should have.
This year going into the season we are looking good, not great but good. We are starting the season with a strong pitching staff and a solid lineup, once again, good not great.
We have an unusual amount of freak injuries with a starting pitcher and multiple fielders. We have to rely on the rest of our bullpen and some young, zero experience players to play. One of our starters who was strong last year has lost/or does not have the ability to throw one of his pitches that he relied on last year and throws what equates to BP as a starter.
The younger guys filling in for the starters make the usual mistakes and don't walk out there as freshmen and knock the ball out of the park every at bat and make every play.
It is time for guys to wake up on here. We have been competitive and in damn near every game we have played with a rookie lineup. We have played our asses off and we are giving it everything we got. We are starting to recover from our injuries but we are still playing hurt.
What everyone on here needs to realize is this is not you childhood state team. This is not your childhood conference either. We are YEARS removed from being talked about as the "number one place to watch a college baseball game."
Cohen took over a program that had been left behind and basically left to die. A Super Regional last year was remarkable. Where we would be right now without the injuries, who knows but the season is not over. We need tomorrows game very badly but this program is trying to come back. The coach is fighting and the players are fighting but we are still a long way from even scaring where we were. Don't believe me, check the stands out or look at the attendance numbers for any game we have played this year.
