Why does the SEC even employ baskerball refs??

Should only have one at mostto keep fights from breaking out. They could save a ton of money and the games wouldn't be impacted very much. Just let them play like everybody used to/does in the gym or park court (call your own fouls). I'm watching this Ark Bama game and they are as consitent as the 10 day weather forecast.

They allow bulldozing and mauling of opposing players and call a foul when someone's pinky makes contact. I dont even know what a foul is anymore, but I know if they called half of what should be called the band members would be finishing most games. This is pathetic.

Also, when did it require 5 steps for a travel call to be made? I'm watching the Ark and Bama pt guards, take 2 steps, hop sideways (on both feet), and they still get the shot off without a travel call. That used to be 4 total steps. They've been traveling almost every possession in some fashion. I didn't know you could also pivot on both feet after you picked up your dribble. I've seen this 3 times already in the first 15 minutes of this game. This isn't basketball anymore, and has gotten as bad as, or worse than, the NBA.

I could care less about these two teams and wish they both could lose, but this officiating is 17ing horrible. I haven't seen any good officials in any SEC game I've watched all year. </p>

Arkansas guy passes to a teammate, the ball bounces off his hip and goes into the backcourt. He runs back there to pick it up, no backcourt violation called. The referee makes the signal that the ball was tipped, therefore no over and back violation, but there was no Alabama player within 3 feet of the Arkansas player that knocked the ball into the backcourt. Fortunately it didn't affect the game any, but it was one of the worst calls or non-calls I've ever seen.

It's almost impossible to become emotionally involved in college basketball, because college basketball is not about the players executing up & down the court: It's about ill-trained & unqualified refs creating a separate spectacle.

and coaches are being throttled for any little public complaint, it will never change. I bet these terrible officiating jobs would become much less common if refs knew in the backs of their minds that they might actually be held accountable for poor performances. Any kind of standard like that would probably run off a lot of officials since for most it's not a job they can make a living on, however, and I'm sure that's at least part of the reasoning for the conference's policy on the issue. It's a very frustrating problem.

As for the traveling issue, there's actually not a defined maximum number of steps when in a shooting motion; it's a judgement call by the official. It's generally said to be four, but that's obviously a much-abused guideline.
