Why doesn't our d-line get their hands up?

Thank you.....especially on short 3rd downs.

Teams know our QB is short and stares down the receiver..

Definitely not coaching.

That was a joke. I am sure they have been drilled that, but get exhausted with paper thin numbers. Just like the qbs are drilled to look for easier routes. You can lead a horse to water...

I saw Iowa do i all the time. Effectively. Now I see Mich and Ohio State doing it. Our d line needs to learn how to do this.
Wow, glad someone brought this up. We get it done to us all the time especially with TA being 6-6.1 feet tall. It is perplexing.

After yesterday, I'd just be happy with them getting their hands anywhere near an opposing ball carrier. But point taken.

our defensive linemen aren't going to knock down any passes while flat on their backs
Our lineman are too busy just trying to stay vertical. Maurice is our best lineman and even he is just an average player. Stoltenberg? Meh. Big kid but he plays with poor pad level and is easily leveraged out of most plays. Maybe with experience he will get better. Ditto the Davis twins. But so far they aren't world beaters either. Defensive ends? Good grief. I mean seriously. I have followed Husker football since 1966 and our ends are, without a doubt, the worst I have ever seen at NU

Do you think it's "paper thin numbers" or perhaps, a lack of substituting by our coaches?

I guess my point is that substituting develops depth.
Perhaps we have no depth because we don't substitute enough. Certainly there were opportunities throughout the season to give the backups some meaningful experience.

I'm not dogmatic on the issue, just asking a question.

Have you seen what we have to work with on the defensive line? Kevin Maurice has 2 bad knees, Stoltenberg's best offer other than us was Army, Dzuris is a walk on, and Freedom is a converted TE. Give Riley and Parella a little time to bring in some talent and work with the young prospects we do have. We should see an improved D line next year.

So our starters don't play to our preferred performance level, and you want to play folks who are worse more?

I'm sure the coaching staff would be amenable to this, if folks were more flexible on the number of games lost due to the fact that our "best effort" is not out on the field at all times.
