This article makes the whole situation sound so sad, as if he has a horrible fate. Instead, he's about to turn 40 and he has a billion dollars or so. And yet because he can no longer play golf at a high level it's supposed to be a terrible thing?

He won 14 majors, lot of tournaments, lots of money and he's still only 40 and has a half century to do whatever he wants, including making an entirely new and different career in any field he wants.

Why would an independently wealthy man that has spent his 20s and 30s playing great golf want to spend his 40s playing bad golf?

Because he is a competitor.

Because he is a competitor.

Okay, he's a competitor, but why is it that he has to compete at golf instead of any of a thousand other things he could compete at? If Peytom Manning comes back next year is he a competitor or is he just addicted to playing football?

He'll turn to design. I think he feels being an announcer or commentator is beneath him. He's already designed a 5 courses. He's hired a couple relatively unknown designers, Beau Welling and Shane Robinchaud, to do the real design work. Tiger knows golf history much like Crenshaw and Crenshaw parlayed his history knowledge into becoming one of the top designers in the world along with his partner, Bill Coore. I'd imagine Tiger will follow suit although many serious developers will have a hard time picking TW over a Crenshaw, Tom Doak, Tom Fazio, Jack nicklaus, or Gil Hanse-all of whom have designed or re-designed some really great, respected tracks. Plus, he has the economy going against him. Not a lot of new courses are being built in the US. I tlaked to Larry Nelson about 3 months ago. Larry used to have a design company but closed shop a few years back. he told me that the only new courses being built are in china and Nicklaus has that market cornered. I think its logical that TW will follow Nicklaus and Crenshaw-who are now known and respected designers who will not only leave a legacy in playing achievements-but designing courses that people will play for generations.

A bit of both I presume. I don't put myself in others shoes and neither should anyone else, imo. If he wants to attempt to compete, he most certainly earned the right to. Some will criticize and he knows that but one should do what feels right for them as it pertains to their career.

He will give it another shot because he's not old by golfers standards. Nicklaus won the Masters at age 46, 6 years older than tiger. He still wants to try and break the record held by Nicklaus. I'm a Tiger fan but he may not be able to play.

The thing Jack had that Tiger apparently doesn't and never has is the ability to win without his best stuff. Jack could figure out how to get around the course when he didn't have his A game. Tiger is so wrapped up in mechanics that he is lost when he's not feeling it. So, with his injuries, i can't see how he's ever going to get back to the level of contending for a Major. If it does happen, it will be Augusta imo.

Augusta will be it. I think he would have won the year he hit the pin and it bounced back into the water and then he took the poor drop.

Don't forget all that poon too.

I think at this stage of Tiger's life there is plenty of money and poon for him no matter what he chooses to do.

People seem to think that since he can't play golf well anymore he has to design courses or commentate or do SOMETHING that has to do with golf. Why? He's only 40. He could have a career in a whole other field if he wants. I guess he just doesn't want that.

His comfort zone is golf. He doesn't know how to do anything else. But with his money, he could do a lot of things. But i doubt he wants to own a bunch of restaurants or stores like a magic johnson or a jimmy buffett. And I disagree about the desire to make more money. I think at this point in life, it's about more than money. It's legacy. He could do something in the charity world like the First Tee program he helped create. He could design courses. Or he could become actor-like OJ.....or John Holmes. :)
