Why Fitz should stick with Jim ONeil for 2022

The Browns didn’t give him a chance. The 49ers didn’t give him a chance.

Maybe he’s one of those guys who needs a year to teach his system. Once it’s installed it could be like a orchestra on defense.

I don’t know Jim personally, but he’s obviously an advanced defensive mind with great ideas. Why else would smart football coaches (Mangini, Kelly, and Fitz) entrust him?

You should change your screen name to bulldog or snapping turtle. Once you get a hold of something, you just don't let go. OK - We are all pretty sure that, despite our wailing and gnashing of teeth, JON will last the year. So let's have an agreement. Something like: if we go 3-9 and the defense gives up 450 yards or 35 points a game - whatever, we'll resurrect this thread and say "I Catnap22 was wrong, and you, Phatcat, were right". If we win 5 games and give up, say, 25 points a game, I'll do the same.

We can adjust the terms as you like, but what's worth more than money or a screen name to me is if someone with whom I vehemently disagree will admit they were wrong. No ifs and buts - it has to be "I was wrong and you were right". I'll do the same on my side.

The agreement is null if he gets fired or if we end up in no man's land like 400 yards and 30 points.

Sounds like a good compromise. However, The multiplicities of his employment opportunities speaks volumes ...for both sides. Either he is a boy genius and others can't wait to get their hands on his expertise or he is a abject failure and his movement reflects others relying on recommendations rather than facts. in either event, while we lost some long term starters on the defense, I don't know how to reconcile the absolutely horrible performances against good teams.

He is a troll. Don't feed the troll. Probably Turk, Wickerturk or one of the many other board clowns that diminish the board experience for the rest of us who come here as passionate NU fans looking for an honest exchange of information and opinions with other likeminded NU fans. I know Rivals wants more subscribers but I have no idea why LouV tolerates this BS from these guys year after year. It makes reading these boards intolerable in times like these.

I do have several on Ignore but then these clowns set up a new handle and start the whole clown show again. This is the only Big Ten Board that I know of where these kind of shenanigans are tolerated by posters. These guys would be permanently banned on any board. It’s tiresome.

Well a take on why a “smart football coach” like Mike Pettine hired O’Neill as DC in Cleveland in 2014 is that he went to high school with O’Neill and they are long time friends. Pettine brought O’Neill to the Jets in 2009, then he followed Pettine to the Bills.

Trolls are in every sports board, and to be honest trolls can be entertaining. We need flavor in here. If everyone was Mr. Kool Aid or Super Troll it would get boring real fast. Embrace the Chaos!!!!!

I don’t find clown shows entertaining. I come on here to talk NU football with other passionate NU fans, not to be entertained by morons. After all, last time I checked this is a message board for NU Football fans.

What are you doing watching Wildcat football? Being entertained!!! Also, a lot of people realize this and are not as into it as you are. To quote the Joker, "Why so serious?!!!" And let's face facts, anything at the moment is far more entertaining than Wildcat football.

This is not pastime for me, it's a passion. I have been watching NU football since 1982 and outside of my family, friends and work, it's a pretty important part of my life with a lot of good memories. I don't enjoy people who crap on and ridicule the program.

It's probably 90% frustration and 10% trolls. Most of us are just venting.

I think anybody that posts here (outside of the obvious trolls/fans of other teams) are pretty passionate about Northwestern football. Most of us think about Northwestern football more than just a couple Saturdays in the fall.

So - Catnap: What say we come to an agreement on this? No big deal - you just have to admit you were wrong if we suck for the rest of the year. As Butch Cassidy would have said: "you can do it...easy!"

troll noun (2)

Definition of troll (Entry 3 of 3)

1) a lure or a line with its lure and hook used in trolling
2) a person who intentionally antagonizes others online by posting inflammatory, irrelevant, or offensive comments or other disruptive content.
Internet trolls: In the late 1980s, Internet users adopted the word "troll" to denote someone who intentionally disrupts online communities.— Mattathias Schwartz

I can't find anywhere it says a troll is someone you simply disagree with or who is right when you are wrong.

C’mon. Do you want him to put “troll” on his/her signature line to make it easier to identify?

when people come out of nowhere to take the opposite view of 95% of the viewing public, and support it with zero facts, they are intentionally inflaming or being disruptive. Let’s not disguise this as legitimate debate!

PPD, as a former member of the Republican party (not ranting, just pointing out a statistical reference), I take issue with your 5% figure. Just because 95% of people agree on something, it doesn't make them right, nor curtail the views of the others. No idea if Catnap really believes this or is just trying to get under our skin. I think the guy is wrong and want him to own up to it when proven wrong at EOY, or I will, but he can have whatever non-violent opinion he wants.

I think a poster who starts one thread entitled “ Fire Jim O’Neil” and subsequently starts another thread entitled “Why FItz should Stick with Jim O’Neil for 2022” is undoubtedly and by definition, a troll.

I actually like intelligent discussion where there is a disagreement. However, Nap starts his posting history questioning the O’Neil hire (when many said give him a chance) and now has completely flipped that on its ear with defending O’Neil as the board has pulling out the torches and pitchforks on JON. Which is it? Sure seems like inflaming to me.

I don’t know Nap so assuming he isn’t a retread of another handle I will give him/her the benefit of the doubt. However, this person has followed NU for some time and suddenly signs up for the free board to opine on a regular basis with very contrarian thoughts that are rarely supported with even a modicum of facts when the FB season starts seems like the definition of pot stirrer. It’s not the opinion, it is the timing and the delivery.

I am a loyal cat fan. Not sure why I am being ridiculed and targeted by some.

As far as ONeil I just find it interesting that people keep hiring. He must have a good defensive mind/ideas. Also has never had more than one season to install his defense.

I think you just answered your own question. Have you ever been to a concert in which the conductor only tuned the orchestra? I thought not, they're ready to play from note one, and either they sound like the seventh grade band or the Philadelphia Orchestra. The seventh grade band teacher doesn't get fired because it is the seventh grade.

That is fine Corbi. I am not knocking you at all. Just saying some people might not be on the same level as you as a fan as many have come to the realization that CFB, NFL, NBA, etc is if you come down to it, is just a form of entertainment. Yeah you root for your favorite team, but at the end of the day win or lose the outcome had no impact on your well-being, unless you are on the team or are a gambler. I used to be very passionate about my teams as well, including my alma mater teams, Wash Redskins, hometown Detroit teams, but getting older, it wasn't as fun, as most of them were perennial losers with an occasional winning season. Bottom line is that it all is entertainment, including this forum at times. Also, being critical can be seen as being passionate, since it does mean they really care. Let's face it, there is a lot of stuff to be critical about this season.

College football is not entertainment. It is 18-22 year olds (in the case of the Alabamas, 18-30 year olds) growing into adulthood, learning the principles that will guide them through life, while hopefully getting the education to enable them to do that, as well as fighting for the glory of their university. If we are cynical, that is entertainment.

Oh yea, you are a great fan and a much better fan than me and everyone who disagrees with you. Unlike you, I don't have to call fans names to make myself look like a real fan carrying the flag.

Besides, you embarrassed us against MSU claiming we were going to blow them out. You aren't even brave enough for the program to stand up and say "JON must go". The Problem of Fitz is when his loyalty is NOT a virtue. And your new ridiculous beatdown that we will turn it around and go to a bowl game is delusional. But I guess nobody can stop you. Spend more time with your family instead of endless postings here. Take a family vacation during a cat game to smash down your idol. Just a thought.

Are you JON?
No no no. 99% of everyone, coaches, fans, kids.....all know JON should have been whacked. I don't have to know him personally, his job performance goes by the data and scoreboard. It can't get any worse and won't get any better with him around. Unfortunately, The Problem of Fitz has resurfaced. I told people but they didn't listen.

Fitz loyalty is misplaced quite a bit and is NOT a virtue. He is killing us and is self destructing anything he built.
Dressing this thing up like a Christmas tree with a new stadium won't help. Ask Collins. Players don't want to come and play for a team that gets blown out. Back to 2 star recruits for the foreseeable future. We need to find another Mark Philmore, Timmy Tackler, and Ross Lane to get this thing started again.

Ok course it is entertainment to millions of people. Don't kid yourself. It isn't being cynical at all, it is called reality. Why would you sit in a stadium filled with total strangers watching total strangers playing in an athletic contest? Just for the hell of it? Sure you can be a fan and care for the team, but the bottom line is that it is entertainment that easily rakes in a billion $$$$ a year. Why do you think Herbstreit was saying the sport was dying last season? It is all based on the $$$$ anymore and the new rules in CFB that make the players all FAs, with top players making $$$$$ off of their likeness/brand. These rules will keep the CFB hierarchy intact for the foreseeable future.

Well he appears to have had a valid point of view when he first challenged the thoughts on the JON hire. I see this thread as just showing that there can be different opinions as he points out what the argument could be to keeping JON. I jsut saw it as putting something out there and saying "Discuss"

What a load. It is entertainment pure and simple. It is a multi billion dollar industry that people pay in one way or another to watch. That the kids get scholarships (that they get because they have the talent to play the game) is nice but we still watch the games to be entertained and not because son 18-22 year old comes of age leans how to live there life. We can relish that it happens but that is not why we watch
